Let's see, he outspent his opponent by 10 to 1.  He had the supposed rock stars of the Dem party stumping for him. Northern Virginia is filled with federal employees.  The illegal immigration crowd, unions and all the other special interest constituencies went all in.  The RNC spent 1/3rd as much on this election as they did to help elect McDonald (who has been hit with various scandals).  An Obama bundler was financing the libertarian candidate who siphoned off 6.6% of potential GOP votes.

Despite all that, in a state Obama won twice in a row Terry won by a measly 3 percentage points.  Politico has an interesting analysis of this and it is not a pretty picture for Dems heading into 2014, especially since the full reality of Obamacare will be in place by then and it is not going to be good.  I suspect by that time anywhere from 50 to 100 million Americans will finally understand that a) they can't keep their current health insurance policy despite the repeated lies; b) they can't keep their current doctor; c) they can't keep their current hospital; d) costs for insurance and care will be going up incredibly faster than ever before; e) the majority of those signing up at healthcare.gov will be older folks with pre-existing conditions and the increasingly large number of poor as a result of Obamanomics signing up for Medicaid.  As my kids would say, "FAIL!" while holding up a L for loser on their forehead.  Liberalism...never works, never has worked, never will work........

If the GOP doesn't run on their opposition to Obamacare they deserve to lose.  If they do it will be a wipeout.  Watch as panicky Dems try to distance themselves from 1800OTUS and Obamacare and for strident calls for delay, reform, carve outs and so on.  Problem is, the only carve outs they will entertain will be for those that will vote for them anyway.

I'd be more concerned about the loss by the Tea Party candidate in the Alabama 1st Congressional District primary runoff. You and your ilk have to get beyond the primary races in 2014.

As to Virginia, the state goes from Dem to GOP back to Dem....Since 1960, it has been evenly split with 6 Dems and 6 GOP. Both House and Senate are  GOP controlled. He replaces a GOP governor.

Who cares about a so called Tea party candidate in some obscure Alabama district? My point stands, McAuliffe was up by 9-10 points as little as two weeks ago and barely scrapes by with a win and only got there because some useful idiot libertarian that was supported by an Obama bundler siphons off enough votes. Obamacare is going to crush the Dems in 2014 unless the GOP completely blows it.

MM,

You might be wrong about the republicans completely blowing it.  I can see the liberals lining up right now gathering into a flock to follow another Judas goat.  All it is going to take is finding a woman who is articulate and bright and clean (Hillary), when that happens the liberals will get behind it and push for the woman.  The next one is line behind a woman is a Latino man.  The liberal train is pulling out of the station and the woman is on board with the Latino man being searched for before the republicans see what is going on.  We are in the throws of spreading the wealth and being certain everyone is treated equally whether they can lead or not.

And the amazing effect of this race to wealth redistribution: The difference between rich and poor will grow larger… and the line between (the middle class) will sag. Only the life of the very rich will improve. The money wasted on the entitlement class will come from the pockets of the working class.

Proof: The median family income has DROPPED since Obama took office and his "Hope and Change" edicts have been implimented. Yes Virginia, the playing field is being leveled.

Ah! History has an eerie propensity for telling the truth…  especially to those who are not paying attention.
