Our lake neighbor had a grease fire in the kitchen which quickly engulfed the entire home last night, they escaped unharmed with their family and pets. In a matter of minutes volunteer fire departments arrived to fight the blaze, a total of 4 units responded. They were not able to save the home, but were able to keep it from spreading to the neighboring houses. This was no easy feat with the flames above the trees and wind blown embers landing on neighbors roofs and natural areas.
Thanks to the 911 team, the Real Island, Equality, Seman Volunteer Fire Departments and the other volunteers that did such a wonderful job last night. Please help support and thank your local volunteer fire departments!

Can a parttimer become a volunteer firefighter? I'm here almost every weekend and during the week when I call on my Alabama accounts.

I volunteer with another department. I'd imagine they'd be glad to have the support. Training times could be an issue. But where there is a will.... Please do contact your local department. We all need all the volunteers we can get.

Family members of the volunteer fire fighters last night went to the intersections to direct the trucks from the other areas that might not be familiar with the local roads. Certainly a great group effort.

The response was tremendous. The father and son who were there are friends of ours and were frying fish in the kitchen and grilling steaks who outside when the fryer exploded. Fortunately, they were outside when the explosion occurred. It blew out the kitchen window, and when they ran inside the grease has acted like napalm and fire covered the wall and ceiling. They ran into the next room to get a fire extinguisher, but by the time they got back to the kitchen, the entire room was engulfed in flames. They ran to the next room and tried to open the glass doors, but they were stuck. They threw furniture against the glass, but it wouldn't break. The room was filled with smoke, and they got on their hands and knees continuing to try to open the door. Finally it opened and they escaped. Only by the grace of God did they survive. They got to the dock, and watched the house burn. The entire thing took only about 15 minutes. The fire was so intense it blew up a buried propane tank and melted the headlights of one of their cars 20 yards away. It would have been far worse without the rapid and competent response of the volunteer firefighters.
