the numbers for 2500 rpms. It seems almost impossible that they can be correct.

At 2500 the 4 stroke has the boat on plane probably because the prop has a 2" greater pitch than the 2 stroke--look at top end speeds to see prop difference. 2 stroke is not on plane at 2500. Notice how much better gas consumption is at low RPMs on the 4-stroke. Surprised that 4 stroke is quicker to plane than 2 stroke--that's supposed to be the last strong reason for buying a 2 stroke.

I would be extremely surprised if the horsepower measured at the prop shaft of these two motors is the same.

These test results would indicate to me that the 4stroke is greater horsepower with a different prop.

Or the boats were different or rigged differently.

The 4 stroke that was tested is Yamaha’s new VMax SHO high-performance 250 HP four-stroke outboard that was designed to break the two-stroke stranglehold on the bass-boat market. At 505 pounds, they are the lightest outboards in their class. That equates to the weight of a Mercury OptiMax Pro XS 250, and is slightly lighter than an Evinrude E-Tec 250 HO. It’s a whopping 34 pounds lighter than Yamaha’s own 250 VMax HPDI two-stroke.
