In Washington, it is not unusal to write a memo of a conversation or meeting when no other documentation will be forthcoming.  Sometimes it is a memory jogger, sometimes it is "CYA".  But the problem with Comey's memo is that it was not circulated to the WH for agreement, so that tells me it was CYA.  And the problem with memos, is that they can be written to reflect any tenor and tone the writer wishes for them to take.  Another thing that tells me that Comey's was a CYA, is that he circulated it among other FBI officials.

So the best we can confirm is that Comey wrote a memo that reflects his interpretation of what was said and no one else's.  From my reading of what the media is reporting is that Trump asked Comey to suspend the investigation of Flynn.  Because Flynn was a good guy (which Comey agreed with) and Trump didn't want to see him hung out to dry over a mistake.  By now, everyone knows that Flynn lied to the Vice President and he was fired for that reason.  He knew he had violated eithics provisions and could be in legal trouble, so he was trying to Cover his Ass.

So now there is an implication that Trump did something wrong in asking Comey about Flynn.  In fact, the President can ask any member of his cabinet or staff to do something and they may or may not be able to do it.  Comey is covering his ass.  He's playing cagey about testifying before Congress too.  He's in a high stakes game and he knows it.  Apparently he has done some bold things in the past with other Presidents and it worked out for him, but now, he is in a bad sitaution that may not pay off for him.

I just watch video of Comey on May 3rd stating that if anyone had asked him to stand down (paraphrasing) it would be a big deal and had not happened to his knowledge. Seems to me the investigation should be over after watching that.

As I understand it Comey has put himself in legal jeopardy if in fact he believed the President was trying to obstruct justice.  He has a legal obligation to immediately report it.  So either he did not beleive that was what Trump was trying to do or he committed a felony.  So he now has to walk a delicate balancing act.  If in his testimony he says he believed at the time it was obstruction then he is a felon.  If he says the opposite then this is all much ado about nothing.  We know he wants to imflict as much political damage on Trump as he can but he does so at the risk of being a criminal.  But hey, maybe he can say that wasn't his intent so he should be let off the hook for an obvious criminal act......it worked for Hillary.

Now you know why I believe in limited govt and why the less things govt does the better.  It is indeed a swamp and the fever is high.
