I was watching Morning Joe today. They were of the opinion that the Russians were dissing Obama. Just watching the body language was interesting -- Obama sat down, faced Putin and assumed a position of "reception". Whereas Putin just sat down, faced forward and looked totally bored.

Some analysts believe that this is because Russia is still ticked off that they are no longer a Super power.

Did anyone else see the clip? Any observations?

Didn't see the clip, but was thinking earlier after seeing some news headlines that this whole thing looks like a second rate comedy. Obama doesn't seem to understand that one does not unilaterally change a bilateral relationship by decree. It takes two to Tango, and whatever their current motivation, the Russians aren't going to change one thing based on what Obama says - unless it is in their national interest to do so.

Obama is quickly turning into the world's lapdog, panting at everyone else's feet. He must not have had any unsupervised time on the playground when he was growing up. If he did he would understand that subservience just gets you another beating and a reputation as a coward. He needs to strap on a set.

Maybe we could take up a collection and send him a brass set. LOL

Only problem with brass is they would require frequent polishing..... Wait, Michelle is his wife not Hillary - forget that as being a problem.

Michelle would have to shove the entire press corp out of the way to get to them.

I saw the clip and it was really striking, not only the body language but the more overt lack of respect they showed toward Obama. I suspect part of this is for internal consumption but part of it also goes Obama's philosophical approach to foreign relations which for many countries is seen as weakness (whether it is true or not).

You can be sure that the Russians are feeling chapped about their loss of international prestige with the collapse of the Soviet Union. They are also in a bind because they have been riding the oil revenues that appear headed south once again and they are going to be looking for something to distract their people from their misery.

I know I have mentioned this before but the Bush administration accomplished much in terms of reduction in nuclear arms and got zero credit. I am of the opinion that the cold war arms talk approach is probably going to do nothing but provide Russian leaders with opportunities to puff their chests and look like the dominant player in talks with the U.S. Why Obama brought out the old SALT negotiators out of the dustbin is beyond me, except that he has to do everything opposite to the Bush approach despite the objective evidence of success.

Until they can come up with a treaty that has some teeth in it, it's a waste of time. Just please don't make me work on it. I once had to attend a round of discussions on some kind of international agreement and I wanted to cry from the tedium of it. Every word takes 20 minutes of discussion. And then when you think you have agreement on a single sentence, everyone takes a break and they want to go back and discuss it some more.
