Crappie fishing was hot last night. I free lined live minnows on a #2 hook in front of a lighted boat house. Caught seventeen keepers and probably missed that many. I tried fo fish them deep at about 30 feet but did not have much luck before trying the lighted boat dock. They will spawn any day now. Some were fat with eggs. Also caught one 9 pound stripe and some spots at a green monster light on a white bucktail. The stripe have moved into shallow water. I saw a ten pounder chasing gizzard shad in 2 feet of water in front of the house at 5:00 pm. Location was in Sandy Creek in Smith Mountain Estates.

By freeline, you mean no splitshot, no bobber, just a hook??

Yes, just a hook and a minnow. If you are using an ultralight rod and 4lb test you should be able to cast about 20 feet.

So, you cast out and let the minnow choose the depth, open water or brushtops?
How do you detect a strike? Lots of hangups in brush? Never tried this before.

I fished next to a lighted boathouse that had some sunken Xmas trees in 15' of water. I just let the minnow choose the depth and keep the slack out of the line. I got hung up a few times. I have done this before in the summmer also. It should work near any light that holds crappie.

Fished from the bank for about an hour in the afternoon on 3/18 in Sandy Creek. Caught 5 keepers, biggest one over 15". Fished with jig 18" under float, probably 5-8' of water.

good luck

Yes it's weighted. Caught them near the bottom. Water depth was 8' to 10'
