Seems at first blush to be a good pick. The Catholic faithful need strong leadership and he seems to be one who can bridgethe gap between the common parishoner and the church elite.

I really don't know much about him except he has been at odds with the Argentine government over social issues.  Did hear he had the second most votes at the last conclave when Ratzinger was elected Pope.  Is also an outsider at the Vatican which may be good news as the bureaucracy is in need of some reform......pretty much like all bureaucracies that ever existed.

I will rely on the Holy Spirit to have led us in the right direction so we will just have to trust in God's providence.  Either way, it once again shows how the prognosticators on things like this usually get it wrong.  If you want to know how good a Pope he will be just watch the liberal Catholic groups for their reaction.  I suspect it will not be a positive one and that will tell me everything I need to know.

Having grown up a Roman Catholic (even went to Catholic school for several years).  I will say this much, as I watched the white smoke this morning, I was in tears. Had no idea it would affect me that much.
Hope, pray for the best as the Pope is a powerful political position as well as religious leader.

I do pray for obama.  However, I don't believe God ordained him as the Messiah.  I pray every day  I don't encounter anymore stupid things he or his minions have done.

Always searching for dirt, they came up with 37 year old unproven allegations.

Kind of pulling for Cardinal Dolan, however that was not going to happen..  Really delighted with this selection, however..  Suspect we will hear more from the Church on social issues..

I am not Catholic, but my Hispanic wife is,,, somewhat??. As is all her family, each and every one, no exceptions. None.
It is interesting to see their reactions to the Conclave. It seems that the election of Francis is bringing them enthusiasm for a Church more closely resembling it's leader in both spirit and deed.
