With all the Geico, Progressive and Allstate commercials on TV and Radio, those insurance companies must make a lot of money.

I can't speak for Geico or Progressive but my experience with Allsnake tells me they need to advertise because they lose so many customers. We had a massive hail storm come through our neighborhood a few years back. Some 75 houses had their roofs replaced and paid by their insurer, including my neighbors to the right and left of me. Unfortunately I had Allsnake and they hired some hack engineer who said the damage to my roof wasn't caused by hail but but heat damage (the holes were caused by bubbles bursting and leaving pock marks). Of course they could not explain all the dents in my roof vents but regardless, they denied my claim and then added in that the roof was also old. I had three different roofing companies and a professional engineer say the damage was caused by hail. Denied again. Thought about suing them but for $20K I decided on a different tact. My goal is to cost them $1M in business and I am well on my way with friends, associates, etc. By my most recent calculation I have cost them over $300K in premium income. Oh and here is the kicker, upon my next renewal (and after I had replaced the roof at my own cost) they cancelled my insurance. The reason? Because my roof was old. Never asked if it had been repaired. There is a reason there is a website called allstateinsurancesucks.com It is literally filled with thousands of stories about how Allsnake doesn't pay legitimate claims. I could not find a similar website for any other insurance company, just Allsnake. If you have them now I suggest you change before you have a claim. And if you do, let me know so I can keep track of my score.

We have insurance with USAA - auto, homeowners, fire, etc., and have always been blessed with outstanding claims service.  For some small claims they just sent me a check and didn't even ask for any documentation.

I realize that not everyone is eligible for USAA.  It used to be exclusively for active duty and retired miliary officers, then they added warrant officers..then senior enlisted, and now I believe that anyone of any rank who served and either retired or separated honorably is eligible.  For those who are indeed eligible USAA is an outstanding option.

And, by the way, they are member owned.  Profits in excess of what is needed to operate are returned to members in the way of a Suscriber Savings Account.....and if that account exceeds some magic percentage they send the excess in the form of a check....in early December.

and tell me you were thinking about switching to Allsnake because of their commercials but changed your mind because of my post. I need to keep adding to my tally. By the way, every time I get marketed by an Allsnake agent I am polite but suggest they find another insurance product from another market. A couple of times they have responded that they hear that a lot.....no surprise......

First week with USAA, tried to emulate a Paul Prudhomme dish for wife and guests, managed to set kitchen afire. New floors, cabinets, appliances, counter tops, although house was habitable. They had an adjuster there within 24 hours, and repairs commenced before weeks end. Most recently lost chimney top piece in spring storms. Water leaked and damaged vaulted ceiling, along with 3 interior walls. They asked for pix, and estimate. Telephone adjuster suggested that with floor plan, painted area should be expanded for assured match. Sent revised estimate, and received check 6 days later. USAA has every bit of my business that they will write, and we take full advantage of their other services. Unfortunately, they no longer write boats or bikes, and try to push you to Progressive. Never had an issue with Flo but can't/won't support the founders political bent. Thought about Allstate for the toys until I read of MM's experience. Won't go near them now. ($4k annual for jetskis, boat, and bikes).

Grumbling because of all your good claims experience but high five to add another $20K ($4k x 5 years) to my total.  Make sure you tell the Allsnake agent no dice because of me.  I want them to know!

45 years with USAA here, but don't get complacent.  From 2002 till 2007, USAA raised my homeowners rates over 300% on the MS Coast.  Had a friend who sued USAA and won big after Katrina destroyed his house and USAA claimed it was flood (they acted just like all the other low-life ins. cos.)  Shopped insurance when we moved here and found auto for half the price and homeowners for less than that with Auto-Owners.  Went back to USAA after they met A-O's quote two years later.  Shop your policy...every year.  USAA has increased their exposure so much by trying to take on all comers that I'm afraid they're gonna get like all the others soon.

Our experience is far different than yours, and would never want to be in the position that you, and thousands like you, were forced in to following Katrina. BiL paying over $7k/year for wind policy on home in Point Clear that suffered ZERO DAMAGE in the series of storms a few years back. Thats the equivalent of an in state semester at UA or AU, or 6.3 weeks at Spring Hill. I comp shop every 2 years, looking at Cinci, Farmers, ALFA, Lib Mutual for Alabama p&c. My findings are they may win on one line, like homeowners, or auto, or some combo with umbrella, but the bottom line total has yet to beat USAA. Plus, with personal exposure in Florida and Arkansas, it is just so darned easy to push one doink button each month. My inlaws nearly lost their Perdido Bay home to Ivan in 04. That storm brought 7 feet of water through their first floor. The wind worked its magic on the rest of the structure. USAA covered ALL exterior damage and personal belongings, while the flood insurance rebuilt the interior. Fortunately for them, the guest house, on a slightly different elevation, suffered minimal damage and they were able to live there while their home was rebuilt. I kept a Cal 28 at PNYC, insured by USAA, lost to Ivan. Received a check within 2 weeks of them finding it at the bottom of the heap. Even if some other companies premium totals were to beat them, I would have to think long and hard about changing based on my claims experience.

I will complement USAA on giving us a 22% discount upon renewal this year for Paces Point FD's earning a better fire department rating.  I've been told that State Farm did not give a discount, don't know about others.

Filing small claims on your HO or auto policy is reason for a rate increase or non renewal as the carrier has to open a file and may pay to have a claim adjuster check the damage. I would suggest that since it does not pay in the long term to submit small claims, that you save money by raising all deductibles to $1,000 both personal and business.

Great advice. We did that a long time ago, and as the kids secured their licenses, had a card issued, in their name, with a $1000 limit. The card was only for use in the event they were involved in a at fault accident, and was to be used to cover the deductible. All 3 used it once, and repaid the balance from their funds. The premium savings was substantial even after the damage offset.
