We've been residents of the lake for 9 years now and would like the long term opinion from fishermen on where their thoughts are about crappie fishing on the lake. I grew up on the TN river system around Chattanooga and I think fishing there and here require different approaches. Give me some suggestions you old crappie fishermen of this Great Lake Martin.

I am also interested in crappie fishing and would enjoy hearing from some of you real fishermen. I grew up on the Tombigbee and fishing for crappie is a lot different here on Lake Martin. The search is not really a bunch of help so maybe some of you guys wouldn't mind sharing again.

Ya'll may like going to windcreak state park april 10-12 having a crappie camp there. Friday night get to geather, fish sat. and fish fry .Suppose to be several crappie pros there to give info.

Folks who fish LM for Crappie year to year have Honey Holes from prior years fishing. Not useful for new fishermen.

As soon as the water is up, the old timers start hitting their spots, primarily with minnows. If not in their spots, they troll with jigs very slowly back in sloughs in fairly shallow water in Spring.

Look for wood structure in shallow water. Free-line a minnow up close and let him swim. Zap. Good luck.

This advice is a little late for this year, but next winter, scout out your area and find some Christmas trees and brush piles that other crappie fishermen have sunk.  You can also spot some of these hidden honey holes by using Google maps or Bing Maps in sattelite view.  Bing shows much of the lake (but not all of it for some strange reason) at winter pool, so I have been able to spot some new spots on the Little Kowaliga end.
