We know from history the lake can go down 50', but is that the limit? I mean, at what level are the lowest floodgates on the dam? Are they at the bottom so the lake could literally go empty, or are they at some higher level, so if the plug is left open we stabilize at 50' or whatever? I know it is a useless fact, but I'm still curious..

well, actually the flood gates are on 16 feet I think?

But the doors for the turbines are deep! I'm not sure how deep though

I don't know for sure because I've never looked at any of the dam construction information but I would guess they could completely drain the lake in order to be able to do maintenance on the dam. There is a lake in Tennessee or Kentucky (can't remember which) that they completely drained to repair the dam. Will be down about 5 years. Now that is a way to lower property prices!

I asked this question on one of my tours, but danged if I can remember the answer. I do remember that every so often they have to go down and clean the 'trash' away. They aren't all the way at the bottom either, but the lake could be drained if need be. I have also been unable to get in touch with a fella I know who could answer these questions for me. I guess he has me on iggy too......lmao.

-but greatly lowered. It is Wolf Creek Dam in southern KY on the Cumberland River. The COE found some small fissures with leaks in the earthern berm potion of the structure. They're still trying to get it fixed, but it is going to take a while. I think it has been lowered 40 or 45 feet, so far. If a failure happened, there could be flooding above Nashville's flood zones.
Also, Center Hill Dam has some pressure leaks through some rocks showing up below the dam on some cliffs. They haven't discovered where the water is coming from, but the corp will probably lower Center Hill again to fix the problem(s). Center Hill's water also runs through Nashville.

On Martin Dam, I think the gates are 18 ft high by 20 ft long. I think the penstock entrance is down 60 or 70 ft, or as low as 420 ft AMSL. But it has been years since I've been through the dam.

It has leaked since the day it was built. Several projects trying to stop the leak have been tried, but to no avail. The leak is in the earthern portion of the the dam.
