Funny you bring that up. Was just talking to my lake neighbor yesterday about it. He finally decided to shop his and Alfa's quote saved him 50%. Mine is currently with Nationwide because all my cars, my house in Atlanta and my boat are with them so, I get some pretty good discounts. I think I will shop it just the same.

If you have former military time either active or reserves, you might check with USAA. They can not be beat if you qualify to insure with them. You can check their web site for qualifications. To assist, I have posted their web site below so you and others can click on. Great and also the best Auto insurance. They get my an many other's highest ratings for customer satisfactions. I have no other involvement other than as an insured member of this fine organization.

feb, I've had USAA for 35 years and had good sevrice, but boy, are they getting a black eye for service on the MS Gulf Coast with Katrina claims. They settled the small claims fast, but the total loss claims are dragging out. You would expect such from Allstate, State Farm, or Nationwide, but USAA is doing the same. They have been sued by the MS Attorney General.

Man, I hate to hear that. I certainly don't doubt what you are saying. I just wonder if the claims adjuster thing is not getting to all of them. I have heard there is a real shortage of claims adjusters in the area. I know I had a claims adjuster come all the way from Texas to look at the damage to my Lake Cabin from Hurricane Ivan.
I do not think any of us should assume that a major claim will be settled without the inspection of a qualified claims adjuster.
In the end my settlement was rather fair. I do think USAA would take care of you if it were a principle residence in a more timely manner. I expressed to them my concern for others that my claim could be settled in a secondary manner since my Lake cabin was not a primary residence. It still was done timely and fairly. That is an indication of all my dealing with our Company.

Sounds high. I used an Allstate agent out of Sylacauga. Less than your bill. Now are you in a city? How far form the fireplug?
BTW Allstate likes boats. I would not change because my toon cocerage is around $100 / year with Allstate. And DON"T forget the liability umbrella. You runover someone God forbid and you'll find out how woefully inadequate $300K is. Then they want the house too!

I spent 37 years working for an insurance company. I do not know if your coverage is for a second home that is not occipied year round. Some companies do not like those dwellings. Yor rates are driven by items such as claim history and your deductible. Ot does not pay to submit small claims as they will raise your rates to recover the claim and the increase will last 3 years. I have a $1,000 deductible on auto, home, and boat. Use the coverage for a big claim if needed and pay the small ones yourself. They will raise your rates if you file a claim and nothing is paid to cover the cost of the adjuster coming to your house.
Once again check your deductible. If you have $250 that will cause your rates to be high. If you have any history of filing a claim that too will drive up your premium. And, the company may not like lake property.

I also have USAA and have always had good luck and get reasonable rates, but have heard the same thing about storm damage on the gulf. I flew with a guy a few weeks ago that is still trying to get a fair settlement from Ivan. He finally got a lawyer involved is now making progress. It was not a problem with lack of adjusters, but a problem with the company not honoring their contract. I too was very sad to hear this. This person said many other major insurers were also stonewalling and were not honoring contracts without lawyers getting involved.

Unfortunately, USAA has joined the ranks of the others. They are non-profit in name only. I was told that they set aside a budget amount for Katrina and when that was used up, mostly on smaller claims, the total loss victoms had no budget money left.
My claims were small and handled properly, but total loss people are getting the run around. One engineering consultant firm for the insurance industry has been caught changing reports and forging signatures--it's going to get much worse.

Recently changed my homeowners to AARP-Hartford from ALFA. Saved over $250 a year. Got to be over the big 50.
Cars insured with same. Wife had an accident some time ago, service was fine. I have no complaints.
Good suggestions by GoneFishing above. I carry $1,000 deductible. I can survive that but not a loss of my home.

feb and osms, We too have all of our insurance needs through USAA. I am sure that Hurricane Katrina caused upheavel in all of the insurance industry. No agency was prepared for the devastation that Hurricane Katrina caused. It is very sad that any of the people who have had a total loss of their property should have to endure long waits for their claims to be settled. Hopefully all of these agencies will learn a valuable lesson from this horrible tradgedy. I am sure that many of the insurance agencies are going to have to raise their rates for all of their customers to cover the loss that they are going to endure with the law suits that will enevitably be settled with large payments.
We have never had any issues whatsoever with USAA. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is currently or has previously served in our armed forces.
