If anyone here on this forum knows someone that has come here to escape from Katrina and needs a place to live medium/short-term, I have a vacant 2 bedroom 2 bath mobile home. I will donate the residence to a needy family rent free. The power is already on, water is also on. It is located in Prattville in a private park that my wife and I own. I will be at the lake for the weekend, And can check post from friends house (lakefun). Have a safe and happy weekend.

This is very kind of you CATBOAT!
I know of a couple right here in Prattville that lost there homes in Biloxi and New Orleans. They are staying with some friends of mine. There are about 8 of them, staying with a family of 5 in a 3 bedroom house.

Today, a friend of mine was at the McDonald's out by the interstate. There was a family from Lousianna that climbed out of a car. 11 people came out of the one car. 3 small children, an infant and 7 adults. They were looking for a shelter. There are NO shelters in Prattville open. I couldn't beleive it when I called the Mayors office looking for help for these people.
The mayors office said I should direct them back to Montgomery to Frazer, or on to Birmingham. This family was stranded, no money for gas.
The manager at McDonald's fed them, and watched as they asked for change for hours. They needed gas, and when they got enough money for gas, went across the street to the Racetrac.
The manager said hurricane victims had been in and out of there all day looking for a shelter. This was so sad to me. Prattville is a booming town, and we can't even open ONE shelter? With all the churches and organizations we have, not one shelter. Sad huh?

I will be sure to tell my friend (whom you probably know,....they own a local paint store in town) about your offer. I don't know what lies ahead for the people they have in their home, but I am sure it would be nice to know there is someone out there like you.

Very nice CAT. We've got a family moving into our two bedroom cabin Monday as well. Figured giving up our fall (and likely winter) at the lake was the least we could do.

CATBOAT, before I call my friend- is your trailer furnished or not? Also,
what would they need to set up house?

Not furnished, but I have a couple of chairs, and maybe a bed. I will have to check and see what we have. There are no dishes, towels and such. But it's a start.

Most generous and a person with a big heart.

I do not want this to sound negative, but at least talk to an attorney prior to allowing anyone you do not know to stay in your place without some form of lease agreement. There could be concerns about liability and along with termination terms if you ever needed to have your place back. I am not a lawyer and the laws are different in each state.

Please help others and also protect yourself and your family. I had a close friend in a different state that took close to two years to evict a family since they had no lease and there was not even an oral agreement as to monthly rent. Their place got totally trashed, and there was no security. All because they tried to help out their fellow man.

Even if you just charge a penny a month. Not trying to start anything here, but make a phone call to reassure yourself. I hope I am wrong.

We live on the coast between Biloxi and Pascagoula. Just returned about midnight last night to the lake. I'm sure everyone has seen the damage on TV, but you can't appreciate the total, complete destruction of a community. The smells, belongings hanging from trees, helicopters overhead hauling out the dead, downed bridges, blocked roads, absolutely no communications, etc, etc.

No gas within 100 miles of Mobile last night. People need food, gas, generators, clothes, everthing. If we wait on the government, and network TV to help everyone will suffer more. Whatever anyone can do will be greatly appreciated by those on the coast. Rich, poor, or in-between, everyone needs your help. Money doesn't work down there now--help does.

Thanks feb. I am aware of the laws and lease agreements. I have owned the park for 20 years and trust me, i have learned the hard way. I will require a lease agreement for the term of 90 days, with terms for eviction included. Maybe do it for $1.00 per month or something like that. If they are still homeless at that point, I'll consider renewing under same terms. Now, yall get busy and find a family.

I talked with Greg D @ the Paint Store about the family he is housing.
He said the situation is so bad, that he thought (for now) it would be best for them to stay where they are. They've lost EVERYTHING, and at least they are comfortable being with someone they know. Whenever they get the little bit of news they get, they have a shoulder to cry on.
Greg said he would mention your trailer to them, and was gratefull for your kindness.

He also said there was a family (on the news last night) that had a son in wheelchair and oxygen (I think) that needed power for him, that are staying in the Embassy Suites in Prattville. They are having to leave because of some Auburn fan has reservations for the weekend and won't give up them up. They also need help.

What is wrong with everyone? Is a football game more important than the life of another?

OSMS, I live in pascagoula. I am at the lake with the grandson. Husband and family there trying to get recovery started. He told me that in Pascagoula today, they finally showed up with truck loads of water and ice. Nat'l Guard was distributing on a drive thru basis and it moved fast. My daughter and friend drove thru with a small pickup and when they had made the line, it was rounded up with water and ice. FINALLY. I will return tomorrow to the coast as we now have a place setup. 1 bedroom duplex for 4 people. We will have water, but no power.

My home is one block off the beach in Pascagoula. All of Beach Boulevard was leveled, including Trent Lott's house. Remarkably, my house sits in the center of destruction and looks as if it were not touched. I did get water inside, though. I have someone's house in my front yard.

My husband told me just a while ago, he was at the house trying to retrieve a few things and there was a man walking down Washington Avenue with a gun in his hand, just pacing back and forth. Scary.

If you checkout www.sunherald.com, on the first page there is a section of photographs, under category "Pascagoula-Gulfport", photo #8 was made in my side yard. The white building in the background is my storeroom. It too appears to be unhurt, while the foreground speaks for itself. Several of the pictures were made along the block my house is on.

We are hearing that three prominent doctors in the area rode out the storm in Gautier with their families (children). They have not been heard from.

This makes Camille look like a walk in the park.

We have made the decision to complete this recovery and sell all of our properties and business there and move to Alabama. Enough is enough.

Glad your family is OK.

CAT BOAT,

Your kindness is overwellming. To know that some people are willing to make a difference by opening there hearts to those who lost everything is amazing. I personaly know 12 people who homes were badly damaged and lost durring the hurricane. I intend to follow up with them about your offer.

I hope that anyone who can assist the Gulf Coast victims will follow in your footsteps.
