Gotta build a new one this winter. My neighbor just built one using blue plastic 55 gal drums for floatation. Much cheaper than the black foam filled floatation and I'm sure not as long lasting but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on using the drums?

My thought is lumber is not cheap either.  Buy the foam filled black floats and you're good for many years.  Puncture a blue barrel and you've got a real problem that could have been avoided for a couple of hundred bucks.  Trying to repair or replace a float is not easy either.  Make the frame and decking lumber last a lllloooonnnngggg time with good floats.

I would check with Alabama Power as do not think the drums are approved for floating docks.

Are you sure that you want your dock to be blue????

When we built our floating dock we used the blue foam material approved by APCO.  Check out the website under I think shoreline management and the rules are there, along with the permit application which you will need to do to replace an existing floating dock (if you haven't already).

One comment about drums, unless they are filled with some flotation material I would worry about punctures and leaking.  Not so with the approved foam material.

Barrels are not allowed at all.  I think even the blue encased foam has been removed from approval not certain about that.  Check first.  It could be very costly later and the barrels do not offer as stable a platform.

We also used the blue billets several years ago, but next time will go with the encapsulated floats next time - I have not been satisfied with the durability of ol' blue..
