The house is done and so is the dock, now we are shopping for a pontoon boat. We are first time boaters and need lots of advice. We can not afford a new one, given the prices I have seen on line. Any suggestions, send them my way. thanks!

Try the Russell Pre-Owned boat Center at Kowligia. Or check out Cathouse Performance Marine he may have a used one that is in good shape.

Make sure you get a tritoon and would not have less than 150 HP at a minimum. The more HP the better as Martin is a very large lake. Also would not rule out of nice deck boat as multi purpose and large capacity. But whatever you do ride in rough water before you buy any boat! !!

Agree with Mav..also, look at the string about pontoons on the maintenance forum. There if a huge difference in how various pontoons handle. Drive it before you buy it and make sure to test drive the latest handling technology.

Besides getting a tritoon, try to get a 4 stroke motor. They are quite and from my experience get much better gas mileage and no oil to mix. Good luck

The new two strokes are not your daddy's Olsmobile. The technology has changed dramatically. I have a 4 stroke on my pontoon, but a new two stroke on my performance bass boat. The fuel ecnonomy is better now on the two stroke, there is no smoke and you no longer mix the oil and gas. The oil goes in one small tank, and the gas goes in your regular gas tank. The engine mixes the oil to gas ration. The mix is a lot less oil than in the old days. You also get higher performance on the newer two strokes.

You can also try The Bulletin Board in Montgomery, Boat Trader.com and Craigs List. Be careful on Craigs List thoiugh, it may just be a serial killer just trying to lure you in. I'm happy to see you're not following the norm of first time boat owners and getting a 42 footer with a 12,000hp engine.

There is no better advice than what Mav stated. Ride on the rough water that is the norm for lake martin and then decide if you like the boat. Pontoon boats can pretty much take any rough water but if your in the market for fiberglass you better drive it in the rough wakes to decide if you like it. Heavy and long are the two main requirements for fiberglass boats. Something to keep you in the water instead of flying over it. The 4 stroke is a little exaggerated. Quiet yes...better gas mileage....hmmmm?? The new two strokes are nice.....however if you are not going to be buying a new boat, then the new 2 stroke is probably not on a "old" boat. They just came out a year or two ago. I was fiberglass and got tired of spilling good liquor so I now ride a pontoon and not a drop is wasted. Welcome to the lake.

You want to look at 2 stroke and 4 stroke and you are interested in a used pontoon, be sure and look in the classified ads. And, if you have an interest in a 2003 Crest with a 90 hp 2 stroke............I have one there you may want to check out. Otherwise, welcome to the lake community.

Do not really need for fishing. My husband wants seats not individual chairs. Looks good, thanks!
