Announced today that these will be changing their name, to appease "racist" concerns. I have bought all those things at one time or another, and I can honestly say that I have never given a thought to the image on the package. Now the case with Aunt Jemima is sad - After slavery, she was a cook for a judge and he introduced her to an executive at General Mills. They took her recipe and her image and never paid her a dime, likely taking advantage of her being illiterate and black. Her grandson's tried to file a $2M lawsuit, but the case was thrown out of court. Aunt Jemima died back in the 1920s.
This is what I mean about some black people only seeing things through the prism of racism. And I have to say I find it amusing that all these companies are jumping on the BLM bandwagon. If they were really concerned about black people, they could contribute funds to educational institutions to create opportunities for the poor and disinfranchised. As far as I know. BLM is not giving money to black communities, black colleges or anywhere other than the Democratic party.

I'm quite perturbed by Saltine crackers. Time to burn down Dadeville. Just my opinion matters.

Hey, Hound. Like you, I never thought of the product or the logo in racial terms. I can see in today's environment how this image could be offensive, especially to those who are looking for things to be offended about. Her story as you've depicted it may not be completely accurate according to what I've heard and read as she was quite the celebrity in her day making all kinds of appearences and becoming an advocate for poor blacks, especially the children. She helped start a huge church in Chicago and became a missionary. Seems that she had a very interesting and financially successful life as the first African American to be the logo for a major American corporation.

We can only hope that Aunt Jemina got something for her recipe and her appearances. I read two different things - one said she was well compenstated and another said she got nothing.
I think that what is missed is that so many black cooks were celebrated for their cooking - and some of the best food came from black cooks. So to see it reduced to racism is rather sad.
