Does anyone have any information whether the "stripes" or some call "white bass" have made their "run" up the sloughs? It has been my experience that it usually happens for about two days usually about mid-March. I don't know if the water is at the right depth for their "run" or if the weather may have had an affect on the timing. When they are "running" I catch them on a "small" white jig. Year before last I literally made 12 casts and caught 12 fish(usually one to three pounds). My experience has been in the "Moonbranch" slough. I am going to the lake tomorrow to start my spring cleanup and plan to make a few casts.

Let us know how you do casting. Remember, fish, work, fish, fish, fish, work, fish. You can always work again but you can't  always fish the run up the slough. Good luck.

Good advice. My main concern at the moment is finding out if anyone has already "experienced" the run. I am almost at the end of a long slough and have been lucky a few times in the past. I missed out last year so hope I might luck out tomorrow. They only seem to run for a couple of days.

I would fish some dock lights in your area at night.  They will be there pre and post spawn.  White bass can get annoying when your targeting crappie and you catch white bass on every cast.  They are not very good eating.  My least favorite eating freshwater fish.

stripes and white bass are 2 different species. white bass do congregate and spawn and swarm etc. Stripes cannot spawn in Martin nor the upstream stretch of the Tallapoosa above Jaybird Landing. while stripes and white bass might sometimes, during some parts of the year like now, happen to occupy the same water, they act pretty differently and require different tactics.

I think the March cold snaps messed with spawning season for all of the major game fish.  They wanted to get frisky, but the water would never warm up.

Striper eggs need to be suspended in current until they hatch, usually in 2-3 days.  Apparently, the river above Martin cannot provide those conditions. White bass, on the other hand, have much less specific spawning needs.  Their eggs don't need to be suspended, so any creek with a regular flow, or even points where the wind creates current, will do for them.  I have caught white bass in the very backs of some really small creeks with hardly any flow, so as long as the eggs don't get buried in silt, at least a few will spawn in creeks you can jump over.
