I am not a big sports fan.  In fact not even a small sports fan. I am a casual Auburn fan and watch most of their games. My question is why do quarterbacks raise a leg right before the snap when in the shotgun formation. I think I know but would like to know for sure.

...good question...it is obviously a visual timing mechanism but you already know that so we will await for a detailed response from the football guru, Lakngulf, to shed some light on the situation...

I don't think it is actually the signal to hike because many times the is a 1 or 2 second delay and none of the other linemen can see it. My best guess is to make sure the center actually hikes the ball to the right player as opposed a running back that may be in the back k field. Glad to k own I'm not the only one that doesn't know for sure.

My guess is that it's a signal for a back or wide receiver to go into motion.

Well, since BigFoot threw me into this, I guess I will have to answer.  It seems to me it is the same as when I am in a deer stand, and the whitetail in front of me stops just outside of bow range and starts stomping her foot, and then runs!

It can mean multiple things. It came about because of the shotgun formation being run almost every play. Normally it is a signal to one of the guards to let the center know the snap count. It can also be a signal for a back or wide receiver to go in motion. the hans slaps that the qb is doing also is a signal depending on when in the count and the position in front of his body. The count and meanings usually change so that the other team does not start anticipating the snap or play.
