That is one sick and stupid boy.  We all have our sides in Auburn vs Alabama ... but come, killing trees is taking it a bit too serious.   Then to call a radio show and admit it ... that is one dumb dude.

From what I am reading, he has violated federal and EPA laws ... and will spend many years in jail once he is caught and convicted.

That's not a reflection on Dadeville. Just the idiot who did it.  Such a pathetic, small mind.  Won't be missed while he is in jail.

Two important… and undeserving… things managed to get destroyed.  The stately, riotously ceremonial oak trees on Toomer’s Corner in Auburn – and – the reputations of Alabama fans.

I hope they catch the @$$hole and tie a shoestring tight around his gonads.  The blood supply to his brain will then be cut off and he’ll die like the trees.  But, THAT won't happen.  The criminal will get either a suspended sentence, or he will be out of jail before the environmental remediation is finished.  It will be tough to collect damages from a civil trial... from someone who has moved to California... or some other place far away.

My Hokie sympathy goes out to the War Eagles… and to the Tide.  Neither you nor the oaks deserved this!

I'm just sick about this. Those beautiful trees, poisoned over a &*%% football rivalry. I feel sure that they will catch the jerk, and he will be brought to "justice" but that won't bring back the trees. I"m praying for a miracle that the trees will somehow be saved. What concerns me is will some equally deranged Auburn fan try to extract (or raise the ante) on Alabama?

This act defies logic. I am a big Auburn fan but, cannot imagine this rivalry prompting me to do something like this. Perhaps it is time for the rivalry to end. And no, I am certainly not putting the blame on the Bama Nation... This is the act of 1 idiot. However, if you go to the Alabama message boards, it appears most are high-fiving and celebrating the act. Go figure.

Is that true the some Alabama fans are celebrating? That's disgusting. It hurts my heart to hear that.

is not to hack Maj off by killing a tree.  I would say it is safe to assume that if the guy is caught and goes to trial, Maj would likely be one juror struck from the list by the defense.  I can only imagine the interview of potential jurors with him in the box..   :-)

Perhaps this heinous act will cause everyone to reflect on the sometime acrimony between the fans of football rivals.

The problem, of course, is not the civil among us; but, the cretins who paste team logos on their rusty old rolling wrecks and, despite having barely finished high school, talk trash and act even worse.  Folks in that level of society, have a peculiar and sometimes destructive perspective on team loyalty and little understanding of sportsmanship.  Their vandalism degrades our ability to enjoy our rivalry.

You are right... jury duty is usually rather brief for me.  I believe more in the Wisdom of Solomon, than the theater of injustice as it now practiced by lawyers.

My strategy for getting out of jury duty is to stand up and proclaim I am in favor of the death penalty for parking violations.  "You're excused" follows shortly thereafter.

Actually, I wouldn't mind being on a jury.  But, the lawyers have a way of ferreting out originalists... and they certainly can't have that!

Good news ... thanks for sharing. I assume other charges are pending. I heard that the illegal use of that hericide is also an EPA violation and considered a terrorist act since it has the potential to contaminate ground water.

I would guess those doing that never set foot on the Alabama campus....

I propose Texas justice - hang the bturd from the tree for all to see. My daughter - a student - is devastated over this.

My wife went to Bama.  I went to Virginia Tech.  But, Oh! How disheartening this must be to the War Eagles.  No one else has a ritual quite like this jubilant decorating of two central and venerable old trees to celebrate a sports victory.

I surely hope that the rumor of Bama Nation celebration is not true.  That is, in my opinion insensitive and spiteful… exactly representative of the misapplication of pride that lead to the vengeful desecration at Toomer’s Corner.

Let MAJ take care of the hanging - his noose would be microscopic.

Check out the Alabama Message Boards on Scout.com. They are ecstatic for the most part. I really think the "Rivalry" should be discontinued. I know it's just 1 individual but, the hatred that caused him to do this is not his alone.

If people can't handle the rivalry better than this, then the rivalry needs to stop. I came very close to ending a friendship with someone who went to Auburn this year over her celebrating and getting downright ugly with happiness every time Alabama lost. I didn't care so much about the game, but I find it hard to tolerate someone taking so much pleasure in a poor outcome for a rival team. I certainly didn't feel angry at Auburn for having a winning season. This year, they outplayed everyone. How could every resident of Alabama not feel a sense of pride that Auburn had such a good year this year? They represented their school and our state admirably. Why can't it be just good fun? What happened to the attitude about our rivals that says "we'll get them next year"? Isn't that supposed to be the fun? And it's entirely likely that the man that poisoned the trees never attended either school. And it deeply saddens me to think anyone could take pleasure out of the killing of a living tree. Those trees are as much a part of the history of the city of Auburn as they are a symbol of Auburn's joy at winning.

we agree on this. I don't think you can just stop a rivalry. It is competition and that is good and heathy. making it personal like this guy did is over the top. I am troubled that there are people praising his actions ... they are no better. The piece I agree on is, last year when Alambama went to the national championship and won ... I routed for them and was proud ... even though I am a die hard Auburn fan.

He isn't living there now. He's in jail. I suspect his lease will be terminated.
