yesterday from Walnut Hill down hwy 50 to 229, there are 4 gas stations-- prices for regular varied from $4.29 to $4.42 to a high of $4.77; no pumps were closed due to shortage so convince  me theres not some price gouging going on

It is called capitalism.... I remember years ago when I lived up North there was a Texaco and Exxon station across the street from each other. One always had a higher price by a few pennies. Then, suddenly the other would be cheaper. I found out later that the same person owned both.

This happens almost everywhere regardless of the average price of gas.  Have several options for gas and it tends to be cheaper like at Exit 79 of I-85 or along 280 in Opelika. Have only one option in the middle of nowhere and it tends to be more expensive.  There may also be a difference in how much remote stations pay for their bulk gas delivery due to the distance from the bulk terminal.  

It's a balancing act for them.  Most stations make very little profit on gas.  They rely on the gas bringing people into the store to overpay for other stuff.  Remote stations won't have the traffic that a more urban station does so they need to make up for it with gas profit.  But they know if they raise it too high people will pass them by and be willing to travel to a lower cost station even if its inconvenient.  My daughter's boyfriend's dad owns gas stations in Texas and he told me all his profits come from Hunt Brothers pizza sales.  ??

Things that some stations do to get you inside is either make you go in and present your card before pumping gas, or after pumping says "Clerk has the receipt."  In the first case I just go to another station and the second I just forego getting a receipt.  Unless traveling long distance I have no need for any of their offerings other than gasoline.

I can understand the Hunt Brothers Pizza.  Sadly it is the best pizza in Tallapoosa county.  And yes, I have had Chucks and Lake martin Pizza company.  I had a great lunch at the LMP at hwy 34 and it was great.  Me and the boss went back few nights later and had a great pizza again.  Unfortunately the couple of times since then have been one big greasy mess.
