From the WaPo Ombudsman:

Roxana Tiron, a reporter for the Hill newspaper, said she was talking with a congressional staffer inside a House entrance to the Capitol when a "trembling" and "agitated" Carson said he and Lewis had just been called the N-word by protesters outside. "He literally grabbed me by the arm and . . . said 'You need to come out with me,' " imploring her to step back outside to listen to the taunts. Post reporter Paul Kane was nearby and witnessed Carson's reaction. "It was real. It was raw. It was angry. It was emotional. And he wanted it documented," recalled Kane, who said U.S. Capitol Police prevented them from going outside. Carson later told the Associated Press the protesters had chanted the N-word "15 times." Breitbart told me the "phantom 15 words" is "beyond absurd."

Through spokesman Justin Ohlemiller, Carson stands by his assertion. The spokeswoman for Lewis, Brenda Jones, insists he and his chief of staff heard repeated uses of the N-word. They are declining interviews, she said, because they don't want to "fan the flames of destructive language."

What I read is that Capitol Police were at the entrance, after all they 'prevented' them form going back out. So if this dispicable 'hate crime' was in progress just outside the entrnace on the steps, why would you pass the police and 'grab' a reporter? First it didn't happen, but forget the 100K reward, the entire 'incident' was planned and staged. We all know that they have underground tunnels to travel by (which is the height of arrogance). So why even walk through the crowd if not trying to instigate something? But to grab a reporter instead of the police is proof IMHO that 'fanning the flames' was the SOLE intent of the distinguished gentleman.

We used to be able to land a man on the moon and bring him back. Now, we’re a beggar nation bowing and scraping to every dictator and slime on earth, pleading with the Arabs and the Chinese to buy our almost worthless government bonds so we can keep up our spending spree on worthless social programs that will turn us into just another shabby, ramshackle, socialist nonentity of a country. The lowlife we have as a president is dragging this country down worse than Jimmy Carter ever dreamed. It’s a disgrace.

The reason the Capitol Hill police didn't do anything is because it is not illegal to call people names. I can understand why he would want the reporter to document it.

What I am having a problem understanding is why some of you think this was staged? You don't believe that there are people out there who would call out racial slurs? I sat in a Russell Medical waiting room on the day after the election and heard racial slurs about Obama, so I don't know why you find it so hard to believe this happened. Or is it that you think that it did happen, but that John Lewis had no right to be outraged and hurt?

Lifer, sometimes I think you are off the wall, but I've never perceived that you are a necessarily a mean person. Don't you think it is wrong to hurl racial epitats at someone, and particularly if that person is an elected represenative?

That isn't a country I want to live in.

I think you are misreading my statement. I said I don't want to live in a country where people aren't outraged by racism.

I'm not sure what this has to do with your service in Viet Nam and how you were treated. You think that because you didn't get the respect you felt you deserved at that time, then it's okay now for people to act out on racism now? Do I understand you correctly?

I'm sorry that you were treated poorly after your service in Viet Nam. Happened to Feb too, and a lots of other people that served. It was wrong then and it is wrong now. It would seem to me that because of that experience you would be even less willing tolerate spitting on people and calling them names, because of something they did on behalf of our country -- even if you don't personally believe it is right.

If you are so bitter, perhaps it is you who should consider moving, if you can't be a positive force for change.

I'm pretty real. Tolerance of a wrong is almost as bad as doing the wrong.

And if I need to move, I'll just hire a mover. Thanks.

One whose citizens respect each other despite their differences.

I'm glad you have been taking notes about me and my life. Perhaps I should also send you my investment portfolio and a copy of my family tree.

First off, why do I think it was staged? They didn't take the tunnel. They had their own cameras follow them. It just happened to be two black reps with a history of 'race baiting'who decided to just take a nice walk 'on the first day of spring'. A repoerter files the story within 45 minutes of the incident (including background info on the 'victims). NO audio or video evedince has been brought forth. And finally it fits the democratic plan of cry racism first and luodest.

Secondly, it IS illegal to hurl racial epitaths at folks under the 'hate crime legislation'. So IF police were around to witness it, SURELY somebody would have called a cop, NOT a reporter. They have boldly claimed that the word was being 'chanted'. It was heard at least 15 times, etc. So where is the evidence. Trust me if it existed, it would be on endless loop on CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC and any other news outlet you can name, INCLUDING FOXNEWS.

IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!! Understand that first and foremost. If it did, then the reward would be claimed and somebody would have been arrested. Maybe to you it seems natural to grab a reporter instead of a cop when when a crime is being committed, but to people with a thought prccess, not blinded by ideology, that is NOT what one would do in that situation, unless you had ulterior motives. Alslo not ONE of them is willing to sit down and talk about it now. It ain't the 60's anymore. You can't make stuff up and expect to get away with it. Especially when there are cameras EVERYPWHERE and plenty of sites to post video on the net. After the fact they realized that the claims can be easily refuted, and even those elected crooks know when to shut up. The spitting incident is CLEARLY a 'say don't spray it' moment. Nobody intentially spit on anybody. If anything the it is the reps fault for getting in the face of a man screaming at him. He coulda/shoulda just kept walking.

As for John Lewis being 'hurt' by the remarks all I can say is BOTH of you need to grow up. I don't give a flying damn about John Lewis or his 'feelings'. The things he and others said about W were MUCH worse. You really are blinded by ideology.

This comment from a Supreme Court Justice sure didn't hurt her now did it Hound?

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

Racist or not? Sure sounded racist to me, but since she's a lib, no consequences.

While I respect the offices, I would be hard pressed to name a politician that I respect. To me, a person has to EARN respect, much as they should EARN a living (sorry, Happy April Fools' Day).

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

So we should "respect" John Edwards? Or the many other dirt bags who have been outed either by others or their own stupidity?

Respect is earned, not a right granted by winning a popularity (or lying) contest.

I respect the Office of the President. The current holder of that Office has done little to otherwise earn my respect.

Truth is we will never know for sure. makes good argument material for the forum, though.

One can go stir-crazy, even in an Embassy Suites - especially if they are hosting a blue-hair convention.

Blue hair convention -- don't miss happy hour, Pal.. Might get a real feel how the 'hope and change' thing is working for seniors.. Might even get lucky.. Hound, I'm not picking on you, but your earlier post about hearing public racial slurs at Russell Medical Center just does not ring true.. I'm a social dude, and seldom, if ever hear this stuff in 2010.. Not saying you are telling an untruth, but did you get the full context, or hear what you anticipated/wanted??

I never miss happy hour at the Embassy Suites...that's why next week when I come back to Charleston I'll stay at the Homewood Suites..still a happy hour but rated PG (wine and beer) instead of the ES R (hard "likker")rating....:>)

Civilian Happy hour pales in comparision to Friday night at 'O Club.' It's even plausible that I bought hound a martini at Fort Myers several decades ago?? Should that be the case, that 'hope and change' never went anywhere either.

But, I do think they need a few women on the high court, as long of course, that they are equally qualified to any men that also being considered. I would not be in favor of a lesser qualified woman, just to have a another woman on there.

I was sitting in the surgical waiting room the day after the election. I was there quite a while, since Feb was having a procedure. We had been having some unseasonably chilly weather. This woman sitting across from me said very loudly to her companion "Well, My Daddy always said it would be a cold day in Hell when a ______ was elected President". I was close enough to reach out and slap her, but I didn't.

Another day, I was in the Xray waiting room (me, this time)waiting to be called. The TV was on and there was something on the news about Obama. This man said to the room at large, "well, what can you expect when you have a _____ President". A couple of people smirked and others, like me, just looked down.

I have no reason to make this up. I sat there for a moment unsure of what to do. I wanted to say something but I didn't. I just got up and moved. I didn't want to get into it with people I didn't know. I was really shocked. Not shocked that someone here would think that way, but that they would say something so offensive out loud. I'm ashamed of myself for not saying something, but on the other hand, it's not like anything I would say would have changed their mind.

Excuse me, what does spitting have to do with it? I wouldn't spit on anyone and suspect you wouldn't either. Your comment comes from left field.

You stated we should respect politicians because of the position they obtained through election. That is just so much bovine shinola. You completely avoided the argument that respect is earned. Why on earth does someone deserve respect because they are a natural born citizen and haven't done anything to change that?

Baloney.

Oh, I do remember (not sure how, considering the number of toddies consumed) the nickel drinks during happy hour at Cigli AB, Turkey from 1968-1970. Every now and then we'd have an exercise and a bunch of TDY pilots would try to take over the club. Vivid memories of "dead bug" and an O-5 sitting on the floor against the wall calmly eating his drink glass....aah those were the days....and the belly dancer with the huge tuft of hair on her belly button...and Fern Seeley losing her dress in the middle of a dance....and...and...and...

No, the Embassy Suites Happy Hour pales in comparison...:>)

It is what it is. You are in east central Alabama. You live in their town now. You aren't in Northern Virginia and you aren't going to change them; only they can do that. Maybe you need to revisit the Serenity Prayer and think very carefully about serenity, courage, and especially wisdom.

I'm not saying that we should respect people because they are elected officials...not at all. In their "professional" capacity, I agree with you that they have to earn our respect and our votes.
What I am saying is a basic human respect for other people. Just because they are human and a fellow citizen. Enough that I don't think we should hurl racial epitats at them about their race because of their health care vote.

In other words, if someone yelled "A--H politician" that would be different.

And I'm not saying that this is the only place (Alabama) where people think that way...
I don't think I can change anyone except myself. And that is hard enough. (Great quote from Ann Landers one time: "When you set out to change someone else, think about how hard it is to change yourself")

Feb and I often talk about a generation of people who grew up in the South with segregation, and find it very difficult to let go of the way they were raised to think.

If you want to hear the n word spend more time with African Americans and listen to hip-hop or rap. Black drillers that we work with are constantly saying that n did this or that n did that. It never ceased to amaze me to listen to them.

I don't doubt that you heard that kind of remark but it is truly the exception and not the rule. You are just as likely to hear an angry black man call you a cracker. There has always been and will always be a certain lack of civility in the world. But we have come a long way from the era of Jim Crow and we will continue to make progress. I truly believe our national discourse on race will become more civilized when the poverty pimps like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and John Lewis are gone from the scene. They just have too much invested and make their living off the charge of racism. The rest of us long ago moved on and stopped worrying about the color of someone's skin and focused more on the content of their character......

about Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. I'm not so sure about John Lewis.
I believe that the discourse on racism will change over time and become more civil. I look forward to that, if I'm still around to see it.
Of course, where I lived in Northern VA, the racist comments were more likely to be directed at Hispanics than blacks. Understand that in AZ, according to my sister, it was the same -- except specifically Mexicans.

I think these were probably just two people I happened to overhear. I saw another incident of very subtle racism one day.
