You recently acquired a 25 foot pontoon boat with NO trailer and are thinking about winter arrangements, would you:

1) Buy a trailer and try to haul somewhere for storage for the winter (also would have to borrow a tow vehicle) or

2) Look into the cost of having a covered dock and lift installed to leave it at my dock year round or

3) Store it at a big name marina during the winter months (5 months) for $1250 or

4) Pre-pay for a year at a big name marina for $1,920 per year (with in and out service during the summer and winter storage included.

Just bring it over to my place, we can buoy it off the pier. I will charge you only for the gas I use in it, and you are welcome to use it if we are not.

My second choice would be a covered lift to avoid the recurring charges, and also add value to your home.

I'd go for the covered dock and lift. Adds value to your property, cuts recurring costs, and you don't have to worry about it again.

Covered Dock. But if you choose to go with trailer, you can use my truck.

I've been pondering the same question. I would go with the covered boat lift if I had the place to do it.

One more option: Rent a scissorlift style trailer for the day, take to storage facility, set on foam blocks for winter, rent trailer again in Spring. A good bit of work, but very inexpensive. $50/day for trailer, $50/month for storage.

I kept my pontoon indoors at one of the marinas year round. It sure is nice not to worry about mildew or cleaning pontoons. Nice in the summer to call and
have it in the water, gased up, and ready to go. The seats are clean and off you go. Storms and hail come and go and you sleep peacefully without a worry.
Keeping it on a lift is great but I assume since it is still outdoors mildew is an issue.

What is the cost for the lift and cover? How many years to amortize cost and will you keep the pontoon that long? Let us know what you decide.

I would go with a lift and covered boathouse if the option was available....I wish our neighborhood allowed a covered boathouse.

If it is an outboard I would just leave in the water for the winter and put a good quality cover one it. We have done this with my father-in-laws boat for 12 years and have had zero issues. It still allows for usage on those warm fall days and I use it to fish with year round
