That doesn't look like Lake Martin. Where are the 4' wakes crashing across the bow and the Seadoos passing within 3'?

I just wonder how much advertising Russell Lands had to buy to get all that "free" press.

Free press, and quite a few whitewashed "facts," too. Some of the descriptions were straight out of 1970.

Wow, I had no idea that there would be negative reactions to this cover and article. Now I know.

I liked the cover. It was part of an overall section on various Southern lakes. I didn't agree with some of the comments in the article, but overall good publicity for our lake. I just thought it was a shame that when talking about restaurants, they didn't mention "The Landing", which to me is more about lake living than Spring House.

I am sure that everyone can agree that it is extremely positve news that Ambrose Canoes had a product of theirs on the cover. A small, locally owned "maker" business is featured on the (arguably) biggest regional tastemaker magazine. G&G only publishes like 6 times a year. This is a huge honor. I am really happy for them.

While publicity is nice, sometimes I wish the places that are special to me could be kept secret from the rest of the world. I feel that way about our lake, Center Hill, and the city where I live as we become more and more overcrowded. Everytime we get ranked in the best 10 places to retire I know there will be another surge of traffic and the infrastructure in place will be pushed to it's max. After a while the natural beauty is no longer enjoyable, and the affordableness disappears. Then the next spot becomes the "in' place to be and it soon becomes overrun.

As far as I know (and it may not be very far, indeed), you can no longer rent a Russell Cabin, at least not on most of the lake.
And I am not a huge fan of Spring House, although I understand it is true that that you can dock your boat and get a ride up to the restaurant.
But overall, I thought it was a positive article.
BTW, G&G has featured houses on Lake Martin before, mostly ones designed by Bobby Alpine.
I have to agree with Tall Cotton, once a place make "best place to retire", it can change a lot of things if the hoardes decide that a place is the "it" place to go. And we know what comes with that. But I think the prices on Lake Martin, over some of the other lakes, will discourage a huge influx of people.

"Tastemaker." Just the thought that anything called a tastemaker exists is horrifying. But not as horrifying as the fact that there are people who rely on tastemakers to tell them what to like.

I think G&G is a better magazine than just a "tastemaker" . But it often spotlights local businesses that might not otherwise be known. Good publicity for them. G&G is defintely targeting an upscale audience, but there is a lot of good writing there. I only wish in their "good Dog" segment, that they wouldn't publish stories where the dog dies.
