Just received a quote from Auto Owners Insurance for our homes, autos, umbrella and boats (boats quoted by Progressive through Auto Owners) and the overall quote is approx. 29% lower than State Farm. Have not had time yet to compare coverages, deductibles, etc., however agent says she used my State Farm policies to set the limits, thus the coverages should be comparable.
Just wanted to see if any of the forum members had any experiences with Auto Insurance, as cost is one thing, but claims experience is another for sure.
Any referrals or non-referrals would be appreciated - as 29% is a rather large difference.

Consumers Report rates AutoOwners much, much, much higher the State Farm on just about every category. I had AO for five years here on the lake, till they kept jacking up the rates. Not sure AO offers homeowners in AL.

Thanks Wix --AO does in fact offer homeowners in AL, they just do not offer Boat Insurance, however the broker quoted our boats through Progressive.
Would like to hear from any others that currently have Auto Owners Insurance with regards to their experience with customer service and/or claims experience.
Thanks.

State Farm offers MUCH better coverage. I would not switch to Auto Owners regardless of the price difference. I have personal experience dealing with them and it was terrible. I am an insurance adjuster for a different carrier that does not write in Alabama. The best coverage out there is with USAA and Amica. Amica generally has higher premiums while USAA is generally pretty competitive if you are eligible.

I live in the Sandy Creek area and I had the following:
A.O.----Home here at the lake
State Farm----1990 Chevy Pickup
AllState-----2 Cars
HOG Insurance----Harley
I grouped them all together and let A.O., State Farm and AllState bid on the entire package. AllState (Alice Palmer, Alex City) gave me the best overall deal. She blew A.O. out of the water on my homeowers insurance. This was 3 years ago and I am still happy with the service I get and the rates are still where they need to be for me to stay with AllState.

I can vouch for the reliability of USAA. Had them since 78, and have never had a problem with claims. And since they have broadened their eligibility to anyone who was ever in the military, more people are eligible.

Agents are nice people but the claims side are pure evil. I had Allstate for 15 years on home and vehicles with zero claims. We had a nasty hail storm come through our neighborhood and about 75 homes had their roofs replaced and paid for by insurance. Houses on either side of me (one State Farm and the other Nationwide) got new roofs paid for by insurance with no questions asked. Allsnake sent a hack engineer out who wrote a report that the thousands of pock marks in my roof were caused by heat damage. Never could explain all the dents in the metai vents. No, I did
I went back and forth with them for weeks and they told me to stuff it and sue them if I didn't like it. In the meantime I replaced the roof at my cost. When I told the roofer about it he told me he sees that all the time with Allsnake clients. Told me they weren't insurance. Two months later they cancelled my insurance because I "had an old roof"......you know, the one they would not pay a claim on that I replaced.
So far I figure I have cost them over $1M in busines and growing. They will screw you on claims, especially big ones. There used to be a website called allstatesucks.com with thousands of horror stories but they got sued by Allsnake and had to shut down. Just do a search with allstate sucks and you will see what you are in for if you have a claim. You have been warned. There is a reason they were cheaper.

I agree with everything that's being said about USAA and have never had a reason to change. I have been a member since 1963. My first claim with them was during ny first year when I was a new 2nd Lieutenant. I had full coverage(both liability and comprehensive). I had four hub caps stolen off my 1949 Ford vehicle. I filed a claim and was advised that they had a policy change and they were no longer offering full coverage comprehensive on my vehicle. I told them I had not been notified about the change on my vehicle and that if I they changed their policy I should have been notified. I wrote a letter to the President explaining my circumstances and received payment for my hubcaps and a very nice letter of apology signed by the President. With that being said, I will say I believe that my rates over the last couple of years have have been on the high side. Now that the holidays are over I am going to do some rate comparisons just to satisfy myself.

USAA is great -- we have them and have had several claims with no issues. They are a little more expensive than most.
Auto Owners is OK but I think State Farm is better. I work for a law firm and State Farm takes better care of their insureds in my opinion.
Be sure you look at your auto policies closely as well as your homeowners. Make sure there is not a difference with replacement costs between the two policies for HO and look at your coverages for UIM (stackable vs reduced). Auto Owners also has Commercial coverage and we run into them a lot for WC. Avoid Allstate at all costs. Terrible claims handlers and legal team in my opinion.
The thing I like about State Farm is the way they handle their own insureds. They are very good about paying claims out timely and without a hassle. They are not easy if you are going up against them but they do take care of their own policyholders from what I have seen.
Insurance sucks but it's a necessary evil.

I guess I'm just real lucky with AllState. I've had AllState since 1966 (auto, renters, home and motorcycle) and had two teen drivers during that time period and I've never had a problem with a claim with AllState. I've always had a close relationship with the agents I've had over those 52 years and I think that means alot when filing a claim. My advise is to go with the company that you think will give you the best service for the $$$ and keep yor fingers crossed when filing a claim. Good Luck!!!!

Our 45+ years'experience with USAA has been that premiums are not always the lowest but responses to our various claims, auto, homeowners, and valuable personal property, have always been magnificent.
