This is the worst year I have ever seen with IDIOTS on the lake. Maybe they will all go home this weekend. They are paying no attention to where thay are going and actually coming within 20 feet of my pier throwing waves on the bank.I wish there was some way to hold them responsible for their wake.

It will never stop. I have one of the "Watch your wake" signs on my pier, a couple of regular abusers have read the sign and keep on creating the huge wakes racing in and out of the cove. It's only 10-20 seconds to clear the pier at idle  or bow down low speed but I guess that's too much to ask, huh.

It never ceases to amaze me......buy a house near an airport, then complain about planes.......Buy a house on a lake and then complain about boaters. I long ago decided I can't do anything about people making waves. I could complain about them, shout and shake my fist and get frustrated or set up my dock and boats to deal with it and live in peace. I chose the latter and its the better half. You can't make every boater be courteous. It won't happen. Take proper precautions so you could care less how big a wake they make.....you won't have to vent on the forum. I put out some small floats to keep them far enough away from my dock that we can swim safely and my boats and jet skis are secured so waves don't matter. Both work nicely and then when some idiot comes by I just smile and shake my head. Much happier that way....

So I assume your reply to ToTheLake would be the same?

MM-I tried marking the swim area with floats and they used them as a slalom. I sold out in 2006, made a nice profit , live quietly now, but DO miss the lake. Like the poster said, the lake is rampant with idiots, and it will never change with the law enforcement that is at the lake

Monday thru Fridays are the most peaceful and enjoyable time at the lake. Weekends, and especially holidays, can be miserable if you want peace and quiet. It is like spending time at two different lakes.

I would suggest one spend time looking at property to purchase on a weekend to see the type of traffic that passes that property. There are many who accept it as a fact of life when living a large lake. Others can locate on a smaller body of water with restrictions.

Rainbow slough has its share of these folk. I actually enjoy the real skiers, great athleticism and remind me of being young, bronze and holding the rope. The damage causer, those chubby kids who ride surf boards off the back of their boats are funny looking enough to almost make up for the occasional dock repair I have to make. As for swimming, a few bouys, my bald dome and white belly (if I'm on a float) tend to keep them at bay. Lake and let lake, peace.

The airport v lake front relativism never ceases to amaze me.  Fly an airplane less than 500 ft vertically or 1,000 ft horizontally of a structure and you are violating federal law, even though at less than supersonic speeds there will be no damage.  Most pilots won't buzz a structure or a person, mostly out of common courtesy and safety, but also because he/she may lose flying privledges.  Blast past a dock at wake speed in a 3,000 # boat, disrupting swimmers, damaging docks, swamping boats and in Alabama there is no penalty of the law.  Common sense isn't all that common any more.

And weak kneed politicians in the conservation department for lack of enforcement and lack of laws.

You can legally fly within 500 feet of a structure when departing or arriving at an airport. I and every other pilot do it all the time.....in fact every time I fly. But my point with the analogy is that people buy on lakes and near airports and then complain about the planes and boats.....or buy near a landfill and then complain about the smell and all those garbage trucks. If you don't want to deal with boats, planes or garbage trucks don't buy a house on a lake or near an airport or landfill. The only thing you can control is yourself and getting all upset about waves, wakesurfers, boaters, etc. seems to me counterproductive. If you plan on the ignorant boaters (and they will always be out there regardless of laws) then you can live in peace on a big lake. If not, sell now and move to one where they only allow electric motors. Or do like me, set up your dock to take into account ignorant boaters and enjoy the lake stress free. I had a neighbor that would get apoplectic about boats making waves and one day he dropped dead of a heart attack. The guy who bought his house fixed all the crappy docks so they could handle the waves and is much calmer.

I use white noise in my bedroom because my neighbors like to party when they are at the lake. Sleep like a baby and don't have to get up and yell at teens being teens. But I don't let my kids do that because I am a responsible parent. Whether you call the sheriff or not, either way you are going to get aggravated about it. That's not my idea of fun so I work the problem and then enjoy.

Since you seem to be an expert on everything what about an expert opinion on respecting someone's property?
All we are asking is for the hotrodders to stay a reasonable distance from out docks and minimize the wave action on the floating docks. PWC doing hot turns directly in front of piers/docks and wake boats that kick up big waves should stay in front of their piers/docks.  My docks/piers are not crappy and I don't want them to become that way due to the action of those that do not care!

after several close calls of lunatics skiing to oclose to my pier//speeding wave runners, etc; I now go out on pier, wave, & take a photo of boat  licence with I phone & send it to the marine police wit short note & my address; amazing how technology can slow down these casual lake visitors; I look at it as trying to save a life since we cant get a wake buoy

At the risk of repeating myself, you can do what I do and design the floating dock and otherwise to handle the waves made by the idiots or you can continue to complain and be unhappy and get absolutely nowhere.  I chose the former strategy because I recognize that complaining on the forum or shaking my fist at morons will do no good and even if they go away they will be replaced by another moron. And you know what, probably half of the morons do all the same stuff around their docks as well.  You just can't fix stupid and irresponsible.

Doesn't take being an expert to come to that conclusion......its called life on a lake.

I absolutely see his point but he and others do not recognize the futility of it all.  You live on a large lake and it will be inhabited with morons and irresponsible idiots.  You, me, passing a bunch of laws and so on will never change that. Nor will complaining about it on the forum or shouting at the fools.  What will work is to accept and plan for the morons and then you can enjoy yourself and let others be frustrated and have the coronaries.

I wish we could be on the lake more with more facilities but we are strapped at this point in time. Alabama Marine Police isn't able to provide enough coverage either. Sometimes we have to live with what is out there and adjust. I wish people were more respectful but on a public body of water you find more and more people using the "taxpayer" or "this is a public lake" mindset and flip you the one finger peace sign.
