Poor Biden.  He is so afraid of what Trump is going to dig up on him.  He has no real platform for election, he just hopes he gets points for sounding like a moderate and he prays that Obama will endorse him.

What does it say about Obama (other than with him the political consideration comes before concern for the country), that he won't back the guy he picked to be the president if somethng were to happen to him?

There is nothing to say that Obama was happy with Biden as the VP.  He may have thoght that Biden was a buffoon.  Politics make strange bedfellows.  I don't know anyone who thought that Biden was anything but a nice guy - not a briliant legislator, not a leader, just a nice guy.

And to carry it one step further, someone nondescript enough that he wouldn't take attention away from the narcissist in chief.  Is Biden's ranking in the polls so high because the rest of the field is so fatally flawed?

He's really not "so high" in the polls and he's only slightly ahead of Bernie.   I think it is 28% to 21%.  Neither of those figures shows strong support for anyone.  Just another way that Dems are screwed - their failure to find that outstanding candidate.  They are looking at a bunch of retreads.  Pete B. is their "bright young person", but he's carrying a lot of baggage that does not have wide appeal.  

I'm not married to Trump or the Republican party, but I don't even see anyone among the Democrats that is giving me cause (even if I would be ultimately disappointed by them).  And of course there is Hilary waiting in the wings praying that someone would ask her to run. But I thought she would have been a disaster and I still think that.
