San Bernardino CA this time.  I had stopped carrying but believe it is time to start again.  The crazies and criminals WILL get their hands on guns.  No option except to be prepared.  Multiple ways an armed defender can save lives in such situations.

I have the same concerns, but I don't see how more people carrying guns in more situations will come to a better end for us.   After all, we aren't trained to conduct fire-fights.   Panic sets in quickly and reaction time is cut to split seconds.   In a dark theatre, one guy starts shooting, the guy in the back row pulls out his gun and shoots, the guy on the left side can't tell who is who and starts shooting at both of them.   

Before you say 'OK, you can just stand there and get shot'.... if I was threatened enough, I would surely defend myself & my family to the fullest extent possible.   But knowing that I am in a dark, crowded theatre or large unruly crowd of football fans while hundreds of people walk around with concealed sidearms isn't my idea of a safe place to take the family.   The best I can do is be vigilant, know where the exits are and move fast.  If I ever find myself running from a shooter, I don't want to turn & run into someone who is so freaked out they will shoot at anything that moves....

Having said that, I have to say I am close to giving up on my hopes for gun control.  It's not just that so many people are fearing their world is more dangerous, but it's because so many guns are already in circulation.  There may be no way to impact gun violence by any monitoring of ownership now.  (I still hold out hope we can limit assault rifles, because these seem particularly dangerous and have no use for hunting)   Civilian guns don't wear out, they live long lives.   We hold on to them, pass them down like heirlooms to our children.... my grandfather's S&W.38 is just as deadly as it was 70 years ago.  

If you choose to carry be really careful, keep your head and hope that the good guys know you mean them no harm when you go for it.

I read they were wearing vests and  were not going to go down with someone pulling a pistol. With all the talk about carrying a concealed weapon, I believe one was used in a church to stop the killing. But then again, I am sure WIX and his pea shooter will protect us.

Copper, we share some of the feelings and logic about this whole thing.  First, the Genie is out of the bottle and there is no way for the government to effectively confiscate ALL weapons.  Law abiding citizens, probably.  Ne'er do wells no way.  Next, I have visualized time and time again when in public places what I might do if some madman or common criminal starts firing or threatening to fire.  There are Mavericks out there who might get trigger happy, but I would bet that the great majority of gun carriers would be exceptionally judicious when it comes to using their weapon.  I know I would only use my weapon in the direst of circumstances.

I think you are right.  Most people realize that once you pull out your gun, you are either going to be part of the solution or be a victim.  And let's face it, most people are not doing a concealed carry with an AR-15, which seemed to be the weapon of choice in these mass shootings.

On a business trip to SoCal.  Prelim info is the male shooter has an Arab name but sure doesn't seem to fit the profile of a jihadist. I am betting some workplace grudge and his background is just a coincindence. Needless to say eating at the hotel tonight.

My guess, if it hasn't already happened, is that the left and the media (I know, I repeat myself) will try to blame this on the inflamed rhetoric of Trump and/or other conservatives.  The sad news about this is neighbors were very suspcious of all these arab men coming and going late at night but didn't report it lest they be labeled a racist.  We have lost our collective minds.....well, California lost theirs some time ago.  Any GOP candidate that claims the problem isn't Islam is clueless.  How else do you explain a young couple with a child, at least the husband having been born in the U.S., would go from being devout Muslim to murderous terrorist.  That is what Islam teaches, what many Imams preach and what will continue to happen until we realize what is going on.

As for self protection, while I agree a handgun is not a match with an AR-15 I can assure you it is better than hiding with your hands over your head hoping they pass you by.  These Islamofascists wanted to kill as many people as they could.  If even one person started to shoot back with a handgun it seems to me possible, if not likely, that they would move onto other unarmed victims.  Something is better than nothing even in the hands of a rank amateur.  That's why I have a concealed carry license and take my gun with me everywhere.  But I also practice and think about how I would handle certain situations.  One thing for sure, as my Dad always taught us, if you pull out a gun you better be willing to use it.  Never had to and hope I never do........but if I need to I dang sure will.....

It sure looked well planned given all the pipe bombs, etc.  They did not plan this on their own or make the bombs by themselves.  They need to find the Arab looking men that were coming and going at all hours.  I suspect a cell for either ISIL or al Quada that recruited these two.  Pretty sad and infuriating at the same time.  I wonder if this might be the wakeup call Obama needs that they are not even remotely contained.  Given his narcissism I am doubtful.  He will blame the guns.  He will blame the right.  He will double down on his claims that they are contained and these are desparation acts.  If he does, I will no longer doubt whether he is mentally ill, I will know for sure.
