U.S. Supplying Israel
With Bunker Busters for Iran Threat
A confirmed military hardware sale from the
United States to Israel will not only strengthen the Jewish state's security,
it is expected to bolster President Barack Obama's odds of luring more American
Jewish voters in 2012.
As reported in The New York Times, the
Defense Security Cooperation Agency confirms the United States government has
sold to Israel bombs which have the ability to incinerate buried targets,
including suspected sites in Iran which are believed to be part of Tehran's
nuclear weapons program.

More than likely, this sale has probably been in the works for over a year. Countries come in with their requirements a year in advance. The case would have to be written (30 days) gone through a number of reviews and approvals, which could take up to 60 days, assuming there were no objections that had to be worked. Then there will be consultations with the Hill before the deal is officially notified to Congress (the official notification period is 30 days). It would have to be worked in conjunction with their $1.8B "grant". So the timing is more than likely coincidence than politics. FMS is not a fast process.
Besides, the article says that DSCA has "confirmed" that this has been sold -- so it may have been sold some time ago. The article doesn't say that the sale is pending or recently approved.

Have to agree, was thinking the same thing except the transfer process could have been initiated years earlier. Might well have been a W inititiative.
The State Department has to approve all such cases - and they move with the speed of a glacier.....there has to be a letter of offer and acceptance, a two-way agreement between the parties, and this stuff can take eons to get through.
That being said, the New York Republican congressional victory was a shot across Obama's bow that he best re-think his policies toward Israel - and danmed quickly if he wants to stay at 1600 Pa Ave for another four.

Yes, I agree about the Jewish lobby and vote. I thought it was poor judgement on his part to seemingly turn his back on Israel. And I'm an Israeli realist, but the support for Israel in this country is huge and as money.

Not having the knowledge both of you have around this subject, I would believe you are correct. Which then says it is just more bad reporting by the NY Times in order to try and make this failure of a president look better. Note I said TRY.

It sounded to me like the NYTimes was responding to some kind of question or other article. Made me wonder if there was an article in the Israeli press. Not the kind of thing that would usually make the papers.
And more than likely Obama would have had anything to do with the sale, so I don't think it makes him look bad or good. It just is what it is.
