I'm a cynic. Don't believe there was no quid pro quo. Sounds like the old "foot in the door" to me. Possible explanations: 1. Companies approach the US government all the time with "great" ideas, but there can be a variety of reasons that it isn't what the company claims. It may not be compatible with other systems that already exist (this is what I mean by foot in the door), it may be too expensive to implement, or it may be too difficult to maintain and update (another foot in the door)leaving IBM as a sole source and allowing IBM to charge whatever they might want in the future once the freebie was implemented. 2. There are acquisition laws that have to be considered and one of those involves competitive requirements -- if the Administration allowed IBM an inside track, any other computer company would have to be allowed the same opportunity. Before you tar and feather me as a bureaucrat, I am the very person who has often lamented why we couldn't hire IBM or some equally renown to automate the government's computer systems. If any administration could bite the bullet and spend the money and just make ONE Department completely computer compatible, it would go a long way to making government more efficient. Just my humble opinion.

They wouldn't be perceived inept if this CEO wasn't running his mouth in the media about his "free" solution. He's probably hoping to bring public pressure to bear to get his foot in the door. If the government spent all it's time explaining why they aren't taking companies "good" ideas and offers, they wouldn't have time to solve the real problems. I still am calling this "the old foot in the door" with a bit of political posturing thrown in.

Do you consider that inept? He wanted to close Gitmo, then found out that it wouldn't be possible, at this time. We will have to close Gitmo at some point. We can't keep these people there forever. Any administration has things they want to do -- some happen, some don't. Does that mean they are all inept?

I would say what was inept was his posturing and promising during the campaign and after he was in office regarding Gitmo.  I know it played well to the left wing nuts but it was imprudent at best, especially since we know he gets national security briefings during the campaign.

But after he got to office it moved squarely into the inept category when they actually started to make plans to move the Gitmo detainees to the U.S.  First of all no one wanted them other than some misguided politicians who were quickly slammed by the public and had to backtrack.  Secondly, only the ACLU and left wing nuts wanted these terrorists afforded all the constitutional protections as well as the cost and danger of criminal trials in our public court system.  Finally, as the Messiah has learned about a goodly number of things the Bush administration was not only prudent in using Gitmo but wise.

And I disagree that Gitmo has to close.  As long as we have enemy combatants that do not wear a uniform and conduct terrorist attacks we will need somewhere to house them, fatten them up, try them and execute them.  And it is not going to be here in the U.S.  I say Club Gitmo stays open as long as we need it.......

I haven't really followed this thread, but when it comes to being inept, I fall back on the analysis technique of searching for patterns.  This Administration has been successful at a couple of things - the huge, misapplied (IMHO) stimulus package, health care for another, but in other areas he has failed (IMHO) miserably.  His handling of foreign policy has encouraged the type of rebellion we are seeing in the Middle East because they know there are no consequences.  The folly of Libya is insane, and his economic policies and big government objectives will place us into the same state of mediocrity that is now felt by our European (maybe they are, maybe not) allies.  Going after Arizona because they enacted a law to enforce immigration laws that the Feds refuse to enforce.  Blatantly political stances and speeches when he should be above the fray and showing the leadership necessary to solve problems, not advance agendas.  Read the pattern...connect the dots.  The guy, left alone to his devices, will ruin this nation  - if he hasn't already done so.

I can think of several Republicans who could and would do a much better job than Obama.  Some have suggested Paul Ryan.  I would definitely vote for him if he were the nominee, but I also think he might be more effective as the VP and was given the job of straightening out our fiscal mess while the pres provided top cover.  He would do an outstanding job.

Someone - maybe you Hound? - said that the Government is not a business and can't be run as a business.  That may be true, but the strength of a successful businessman is the discipline and creativity to solve problems, something that experience as a community organizer doesn't provide and something that a lot of politicians haven't had to do.

Break, break, another subject.  Everyone please pray for the victims of the storms this past week.  And please don't forget them.....volunteer for church and community organized work projects over the summer.  It is so easy for us who didn't experience the tragedy first hand to move on to other things or to get wrapped up in our own problems as time goes on....please lets not do that....and six months from now I would be grateful for one of you to remind me and everyone else of today's plea.....
