The fact that the right side showed several feet of fiberglass shearing as it squeezed through the trees would seem to indicate the deceleration occurred over a relatively long period and thus decreased the chance of injury.  That being said, if the boat were to have been a foot or two to the right or left the result would probably be quite different.
