This is a proposed new subdivision in Elkahatchee Creek. I live part-time there in the Raintree subdivision since 1988. I am not against development but this thing is massive for such a narrow creek. A lot of the Wind Creek park tourists use the creek on weekends as it is a great place to tube and wakeboard rather than out on the main channel. The creek will become a nightmare on weekends with all these houses and condos planned (99 waterfront lots). Forget about fishing in the quiet areas as these will not exist anymore. The development is from the Raintree subdivision all the way to near the Pineywoods boatramp.

Below I have enclosed a pic of the subdivision layout. I can email the 14 pages of the 120 page city planning commission agenda; the rest is about the Heritage. Email me at warren72955@netzero.com if you are interested in more details.

Sadly, they will not be happy until they develop every last inch of shoreline.  It's all about the tax base and making money off the lake.

Everyone at Lake Martin would like to be the last person to move here. The samething was said before you moved here. If they build they will come here as the area is a great place for either a fulltime home or a weekend gateway.

If the lots are approved and developed, the buyers will be saying the samething in a few years....no more development.

Yup.  It all depends on whose ox is being gored.

I have to agree with you Goofy.  Development has been and will continue to be as APCO, Russell Lands and private owners sell land they own.  I've said this before, everyone wants their house to be the last one built on the lake.  Once they have theirs they are now officially opposed to any others being built.  Having said that, not all developments make sense or should be built.  But those that have invested in land on the lake should be able to monetize that investment but in a responsible way.  So not all development is good and should be approved but opposing it just because of concerns about development is not something I am going to do.

Of course they have a right to monetize their investment; however, one would like to think that there are going to be quiet spots on the lake to just enjoy the surroundings and the peace.  More homes means more boat traffic, more potential rentals (I have been astounded at the actual number of properties that are short term rentals).  More people wanting to light up their dock, play loud music,  and throw their trash around.  We have a vacant lot next to us that is owned by Alabama Power and I am contemplating calling AP to see if they plan to sell it and to see if I could buy it - not to build on, but just keep natural.  Its a very steep lot.

Don't misunderstand, I get the concern.  But you could have said the exact same thing about Lake Martin since it was first filled.  Every year there are more homes on the lake.  There is little that can be done about that.  More houses, more boats, more people adding to the local economy, etc.  If the voters that live here year round can get organized they might be able to limit the large, multi-unit developments from a zoning perspective.  That's a bit challenging since there are so many municipalities around the lake so you have to address this with each one.  Not a fun or easy process.  Since I am a weekender I can't really help as I don't have a vote in local elections.
