Thanks for the post.  Fond memories of the Kingston Trio.  Great song with great sentiment.  Of course I assume you and other members of the forum are aware it was written by Woody Guthrie, a lifelong communist and leftest agitator?  Woody also wrote that favorite anthem of the very consrvative Young Americans for Freedom group...''This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land''.  Good days indeed!

what the he!!.  I like a lot of Richard Wagner too and he was basically a NAZI!  If Dear Leader ever composes anything worth listening to I will acknowledge that too.  Since he has only spoken an occasional coherent sentence by accident, I doubt he will ever have an opera to his credit.

Richard Wagner was the Bob Dylan of his time. He was politically discordant and incoherent… his politics were as chromatic and strident as his music (atonal).  Wagner was both dark and uncooperative.  His music is grandiose and harsh… and his operas LONG and require stamina.  He managed to get himself kicked out of (or fleeing) several countries because of his disruptive political behavior.  Despite all of this crap, Wagner thought highly of himself.

Wagner was unsuitable for marriage.  He had a wandering eye and a wandering… um… WELL, anyway he had a number of affairs.  He himself was, quite likely, a bastard.  And his second wife, Cosima was also an illegitimate child (of Franz Liszt... who hated Wagner).  (His first wife was Minna Planner, a dark and insufferable woman.)  I can imagine… with no proof… that Wagner richly diluted the gene pool.

Wagner spend the first half of his life amassing debt and avoiding creditors.  He spend the second half of his life screwing his very generous patrons (and on one case, the wife of a patron).

(“Mad”) King Ludwig II of Bavarian wasted both his political and fiscal fortunes on Wagner (imagine LBJ lavishing stipends on Bob Dylan... including a villa by the Lake).  Wagner’s life ended by painfully progressive heart failure.  Ludwig II’s life ended by “drowning” in Lake Starnberg… while accompanied by his doctor. (Ludwig II built… but never lived in… Neuschwanstein, the castle after which Walt Disney patterned his castle.)

In my OPINION… there is not much good from the life and works of Richard Wagner.  He certainly was a drag on everything and everyone he touched.  On this forum, he’d have a Karma rating of -12.

Wagner was not a NAZI (he came around too soon for the rise of National Socialism)!  That being said, opinion in the 30's and 40's was similar to todays relationship between Trump and racists...Wagner was not a NAZI, but most NAZIs thought he was!

Architect – “Wagner was not a NAZI (he came around too soon for the rise of National Socialism)!  Wagner was not a NAZI, but most NAZIs thought he was!”  Now that is exactly the point.  Wagner was a screwball… in every sense of the word.  His music was used heavily as a theme for the NAZIs… also Apocalypse Now… and his Wedding March ( Treulich Gefürt from Lohengrinn) .

Archie there is one premise to your statement that is unsaid but a key element: that all racists are white.  I can tell you that is not true.  In fact, we had a friend who was an Episcopal priest in Tuskegee, Alabama, and he swore that there is rampant racism within the African American community based on skin tone.  Those with "good skin" look down on those A-As whose blood has not been mixed with white blood at some point in their ancestry and are therefore very heavily pigmented.  There is also significant racism between A-As and hispanics, so your statement might be valid but then maybe not.  And we all know that the great majority of A-A and Hispanic votes do NOT go to DJT.  Add to that the fact that you do not know what goes on in a person's heart, so neither you nor I, nor anyone else on this forum will know for sure.  Absolute statements like yours don't hold water.
