We had Charter... the price kept creeping upward. We cut them off at $150 per month (internet and cable). We are now using basic DIRECTV for what little television we watch. DIRECTV is okay.
We now have AT&T for internet... which is a functional disaster.
Do any of you have an alternative? A recommendation for internet service other than Charter or AT&T?

We always need a better price or better service for what we pay for. I use Charter for tv (expanded basic) and internet and am pleased with their service but it still is about $90 per month. Some friends use Direct TV but have the AT&T internet which sucks.

Tel them you voted for Obama and they may reduce your rate to $90/month. Hope you work it out as I always enjoy reading your comments.

If you have charter at your home and the lake you are in luck. If you do not need your internet at home while at the lake just bring your modem with you to the lake and hook it to your cable and you have the internet. You are doing nothing wrong because you can only use it at one place at a time and you are already paying for it. It worked for 6 years until charter went up on their rates. I now have Direct but had to use charter for internet, but still cheaper than charter tv. You can also use a slingbox at your home and send all your programs to your lake home.

I pretty much agree with gabby. My latest bill from Charter shows you should be able to get basic plus expanded tv, telephone and max speed internet (30 mbps) for $130 plus taxes. If internet is your major consideration, I don't think you can beat Charter. I'm in the Sandy Creek area.

What is a slingbox? Are you saying if you have Charter at home you can use a slingbox and send programs to your lakehouse, or that if you have Direct TV at home you can use a slingbox and send programs to your home? Thanks.

I have Charter at my home in Montgomery. My rates gradually climbed to over $150.00/month. I called Charter and complained. If you get Customer Service, reference their advertised bundle price of $29.99 each for cable, internet, and phone service. If they don't offer you those rates ask to speak to a manager. I have all three services with two boxes for $110.00 a month plus tax.

I have had great luck with using a Hot Spot from Verison, only about $20.00 per month added to cell bill. Works good for me.

Slingbox works great but you need an internet service at both locations.

We also use the Verizon hot spot which works well and is reasonable in cost if you are a weekender, but probably is not the answer if you are at the lake full time. We also have DirecTV at our house, so we had a dish installed at the lake house and brought one of the boxes from home to the lake for our television.

I think you can use Direct on your slingbox, I use Charter at home and when I am at the lake ,I can control my Dvr at home just like I was there. I just have the basic service on my Direct at the lake but have all premium channels at home. You will need a Apple TV or HDMI adapter to watch your programs on your HDTV if you are using an iphone. You can only use the sling player on one smart phone at a time. You can watch tv on your smartphone anywhere, but it is best to use it thru a wifi or it will eat up your data package.

We use Windstream DSL bundled with the phone for under $100. I've read complaints on this forum about DSL speed, but honestly, I can't tell the difference. We mainly use internet and my wife visits cooking sites and facebook.

We bailed on Charter at $170/mo for phone, internet and tv. Went with Dish for TV and internet (Dishnet is Excede). Big mistake. Dishnet is about DSL speeds. Dish is great TV service, internet is marginal. 20gb per month service is actually 10 gb primetime and 10 gb from 2am to 8am for 60 bucks a month. Internet billing and usage accounting is unreliable. Usage one month was 9 gb, next month used 8.2 gb in 10 days. Called Dish and they couldn't explain where the usage went. Nothing changed month to month. I shut down everything internet on Sunday and still consumed 0.9gb. I'm back to Charter for internet at $39.99/mo and keeping dish for TV. Using ITP VOIP phone.
