Are you proud of your country considering you feel that we have a Socialist Democratic President who has talked to Chavez and is willing to talk to Castro?

If you mean Summer Lover (I know accuracy can be a stretch for some of the challenged citizens) – I am 100%, absolutely proud of my country. My mother is from “West” Germany, so I have been exposed to more than most voters in this country. This is by far the best country in the world, and ever since I have been able to see and form thoughts I have been proud of the United States of America. We have certainly made mistakes in the past (see 11/04/08 for reference), and will make more in the future. Our successes (see Constitution for reference) far outnumber our failures. We have a President who shows disrespect to our Flag and a First Lady who is disrespectful to our heritage, and I do not like either one of them. I think it shows how many of our citizens are truly ignorant of what is going on in the rest of the world that we have adopted this “progressive” New World Order approach. I love my country and if you or anyone else here does not – I will be glad to help you pack your crap up, lead you to your favorite border where you can leave your passport and go to your own Utopia. I do not have to agree with everything our Government does to be proud of America – I did not like Bush either, but have always voted damage control for President. There used to be a saying here in the states “Love it or Leave it” – I like that.

So sorry for the typo. It is encouraging that we share the same pride in our country. I am proud to have served in the US Coast Guard.

I was wondering if you did cleaning including windows at the lake in additon to packing crap?????????

I truly appreciate your service to our country and thank the families of our servicemen and women for their sacrifices as well. As far as the windows – I do not think a simple cleaning will correct your views, I find it reprehensible that we now have a President and Commander In Chief who honors our flag and National Anthem by looking like a well-behaved kid waiting for the ice cream truck to stop in front of his house.

If I'd had to listen to that singing, I think I would have been looking like that too. Truly slaughter of our national anthem.

You know, I'm always a little wary about making judgements on little stuff like this. Not everyone wears their patriotism on their sleeve, but it doesn't mean they don't feel it in their heart. I'm more wary about those who want to wrap themselves in the flag to justify their beliefs. I think patriotism, like faith, is something that is deeply personal and not necessarily something that everyone puts on display.

Are you ever going to get tired of apologizing for him and trying to rationalize the obvious?

Don't know when the video was made, probably during the election. He should have stood at attention with his hand over his heart, even if it was an outdoor event and the singing horrible.
But, I don't judge his patriotism based on some video off of YouTube.

I see this as more an issue of lack of respect rather than patriotism, and at this point he was running for President of this great country. As far as this is concerned, I have to admit that I will have a closed mind, It appears almost contemptuous and Obama and Captain ADD Robert Gibbs could not stumble their way out of it. We have a flagpole on our pier, and if we are down there and the winds are not high – Old Glory is flying and illuminated at night. If you visit, I ask that you either show respect for her or pack your beanie weenies up and leave.

How would you judge his patriotism? By the way he is an advocate for the American way on his trips abroad or by showing his support for those who protect us from those who would do us harm?

I could probably find 10 pictures of him standing with his hand over his heart, if I were compelled to look. (I'm not)

Like you, I have some reservations about his personal style (the bow and the grip and grin), but he hasn't done anything yet that makes me think he is not patriotic. The truth is that our country has been thought of as arrogant. Whether you chalk that up to GWB's personal style or maybe as a country we have gotten a little on our high horse. If you want to better relations with other countries, a little eating of crow is not necessarily a bad thing. We do not have access to the minutes from his behind closed doors meetings he had with other leaders. It's generally considered to be bad form to pubicly chastise leaders .. the open and frank stuff usually is saved for the face to face meetings.

I will judge his partriotism by how well he leads our country over the next 4 years.

If he does not do it by force of habit, he will do it only for political reasons, so there would be no sense in searching for a picture. As far as I am concerned, we as Americans ARE better than the rest of the world, and I do not feel bad about it. As far as the world viewing us as arrogant or thinking that we should police the world - this is not new. I also feel that if you earn money, you SHOULD have more stuff than someone who does not. If they are envious - tough. As far as fair - that is where you go to eat cotton candy and ride ponies.

I have no problems with anyone reaping the rewards of their labors. And I don't believe in forced charity, although my heart tells me that because I have been so blessed, I should be charitable to others who have not. Because I truly believe what goes around comes around.

I know a woman through my cat community whose husband lost his arm in a work-related accident. Since that time, they have struggled financially and have been able to depend on family to help them out. After his accident, he was no longer able to do his job and lost it; and since then has tried to make a go out of working from home. She has a low paying full time job. The other day, the bank notified her that they would repossess her car - a car that she needed to get back and forth to work. A group of us have banded together to pay some of her bills -- not giving her the money directly, but paying her utilities and however else we can help. She has not asked the government for help, and she has not asked any of us, either, but those of us who know her are moved to help as we can. She's a good woman and has participated through our cat rescue program with her time and efforts.

Why should I not give a helping hand to someone that I know, who needs it?

That is very generous and thoughtful Hound, and I applaud you for it. In times past you would get help from family and friends to help you through rough times, and I believe that is the RIGHT thing to do. I did not mean to imply that we should never give help, and am sorry if that was the way it sounded. I do have a problem when we are simply perpetuating the rewards for bad habits. We have generations of people who have never contributed, and are nothing more than baby factories – these people appear to be getting aid far too easily, while those with legitimate disabilities are left in the cold. With our daughter, there have been several times that she “needed” help, but was doing nothing to help herself while continuing bad habits – if we had given in all the time, I would have called it welfare.

I think family and friends should help, when the situation clearly calls for it. I've been very blessed - my parents nor my husbands parents have needed help financially, all of our brothers and sisters are self supporting.

I don't have any children, but I could see where it could come down to a fine line between helping and "welfare". I guess that sometimes "tough love" is called for. I have a good friend whose daughter has repeatedly made bad choices and has had to make some hard choices between tough love and looking out for her grand daughter.

But, I agree with you about those who have just taken from the system and contributed nothing. And then it gets fuzzy for me between that kind and those who would make a change in their life if they could get a helping hand. That's the problem with governmental charity -- it doesn't discriminate.
