During the joint address by Gen Milley and SecDef Austin yesterday, Milley stated that there would be lessons learned from Afghanistan.  Then a bit later, they both said that it was possible that the US would work with the Taliban against ISIS-K.  Aparently in a few short months, the Taliban went from a militant group to the US's new best friend in the fight against ISIS.  Hmm, one wonders what form this "work" would take....

Thinking about it, remember how we came to be in this situation.  When the Russians occupied Afghanistan, the US transferred weapons  and funded Pakistani/Afghan rebels and used them to disrupt the Russians in Afghanistan.  Then, when the Russians left, we abandoned the rebels and the resentment turned into Al Queda, which beget ISIS.  So we went into Afghanistan to destroy the terrorist training camps, and drove the Taliban, who were allowing the training camps to exist, out of Afghanistan.  And now the Taliban is back and we're going to befriend them, to fight ISIS.

It's pretty clear to me that if we learn any lessons,we must not learn the right ones.  

I personally think Austin should be fired and Milley relieved from his position.  Both are nothing more than Biden lap dogs.

I think you are mostly correct although the Taliban was never driven from Afghanistan, they were driven from controlling the country.  They never went away and were just biding their time.  Which is why what Trump proposed made sense if we were ever going to get out of that place.  The plan was fine, the execution was horribly botched because Dementia Joe is a complete moron and those around him are equally incompetent.  And I agree 100% about both of those clowns although my list would be much longer as to who should go.  But they would be a good start.  And there is a reason they are there....which gets back to my thing about B players hiring C players and so on.  Except we are in the D and F range with this team.

Milley's Deputy is the one who, as Commander of Strategic Command, told Trump that if Trump gave an order he considered illegal (like nuke Lichstenstein, a country that poses NO threat to the US) he would "have to have a talk with Trump" about that order before carrying it out.  I would say fire Milley and put his Deputy in charge except that the Deputy is retiring in late November.

If I remember about long ago, we gave the Afgans ground to air shoulder rockets.

I have long found it fascinating that we were able to militarily accomplish in very little time what the Soviets could not in Afgahanistan.  The problem is that those in charge fail to understand that unlike Europe and Japan, we are never going to accomplish a transition to a democratic style of government in countries that have never left a 6th century way of life.  They fail to understand that democracy is a relatively new concept and that human history is filled with autocratic rule as their way of life.  Ours is a grand experiment that is slowly failing because of our fallen human nature.

I think you are absolutely right.  Do you remember early on, when we were trying to throw huge amounts of cash at them (A State Department plan, no doubt) that they laughed at us, saying that their money changers didn't have that much money.  And how, when we got there, we were amazed that they played a game on horse back of stealing the calf from each other?  They have never had an intereset in a "strong central govenrment" because they have always relied on village elders to run things.  I'm not sure much has changed outside of Kabul.  One of the reasons that is attibuted to the Russian failure was that they thought they would get control by cutting off communications between villages, but of course that didn't work.  The villages are self contained and most Afghans don't know or care about Kabul or it's "President".  That was our consruct.  Also that women and girls must be considered "equal".  We never understood the culture or people.  

And yes, Shortbus, we did give them shoulder fired rockets, some of which they managed to hold onto after we abandoned the pre-cursor of Al Quesda and then we worried about them using them against us.

Trump who sent his ''lap dog'' Secty'y of State to kiss their fanny and ''negotiate'' a peace treaty with them.  A treaty that included an announced total withdrawal by May 1 2021 and the release of 6000 dangerous prisoners.  A peace treaty that included no participation of the Afghan Government...a government we had installed.  Man, those Talaban muckidy mucks must have said something really nice about Dear Leader...so nice he even wanted to celebrate the ''treaty'' by having them at Camp David on Sept 11.  Face it Trump cultists, no matter how badly Biden has managed to screw this up, it was your ''hero'' that greased the skids!!

Oh BTW, remind me again who appointed Biden ''lap dog'' Milley as Jt Chief's Chm.?  It was Dec 8, 2018 so I'm pretty sure it wasn't Joe Biden.

Can you document where the secret Camp David meeting was a celebratory extravaganza with only Taliban reps in attendance?  Might it also have included the Afghan President?  After Trump proved to the Taliban that he had every capability and desire to vaporize those who threatened any American, (see Iranian Gen Suleimani and al- Baghdadi) he had leverage over them.   Why again was the meeting  called off?  The catering company planned to serve pork?   Your caricature of this particular meeting is most likely one  you gleaned from your erstwhile, most reliable news reporter, R.
