Mitt Romney reframes himself as a ‘severely conservative’ governor. But the truth is that in 2002, when Romney was campaigning in Massachusetts, he said “I’m not a partisan Republican,” ......... “I’m someone who is moderate, and . . . my views are progressive.” Last week, Romney told right-wing activists that he had been a “severely” conservative governor. You can't have it both ways Mitt. After Michigan, Mitt will be gone. OBAMA 2012

It's pretty clear that Mitt is not "severely" anything, except "severely" wanting to be President. He feels like it is his turn. And to add to the hilarity - understand Rick Perry is wanting to jump back in. He didn't humiliate himself enough the first time. It's a grim field and Republicans know it.

I thought you understood how all things political works? Mitt and his Superpacs have all the money, and will win the nomination. Whether he wins the election, only time will tell.....

Get serious for once. The hilarity is that you continue to posit yourself as an open minded independent. Romney has offered an economic recovery plan, aimed at restoring firm footing to the fundamentals. The jackass you helped occupy the White House has offered nothing beyond blatant paybacks to his base, in the process accelerating destabilization of our currency. As for Perry, your take on this is wrong as well. He wants to convert his remaining campaign funds to a PAC, and has asked his donors for permission to use those funds in that manner, or, without that permission, returning the monies to his donors. But dont let me slow you down with facts.

Actually, I didn't read the article. I was too busy laughing at Santorum. My question is how any serious person can take this field seriously. Romney is their only hope. He does have some credibility. But his own party doesn't like him.

When was the last time either party presented a field of perfect candidates? I only go back to 76 and can recall similar arguments. Heck, in 80, the dems had Gov Moonbeam, Killa and the peanut farmer and Peanuts was a sitting prez. The GOP Fielded 9 candidates, tore each other up and had one run 3rd party. 84 brought 8 dems before Mondale won the nomination, 88 gave us 12, including Dukakis. 92 brought Tsongas, Bob Kerry, Moonbeam, commie Harkin, and Bubba. Trying to remember where Rev Jackson fell in. The dems in 04 gave us that rascal Edwards, Hanoi Janes swift boat buddy, The Screech, and the cross dressing general. All in all, the remnants of the 12 Repub field stack up nicely.

I don't say much about how everyone feels about their views on anything on this forum and don't care what they think about mine, but I must agree with most everyone else on this forum GF is a idiot on just about everything he post. I'm still behind Newt until the end. Oblamer out 2012

I do not think that Mitt will be out after Michigan. I still think he will be the nominee. Buzzbuster, I'm curious as to your age group. Do you remember when Newt was Speaker of the House? (Serious question, no snark intended).

Barneget, good buddy, I really hate to correct a good writer but it is not “Rev Jackson.”  It is “THE REVEREND Jesse Jackson.”

Isn't this what the vast unwashed Independents (with the exception of Hound who bathes daily) want?!?!?!? A good middle of the road moderate Republican who will compromise on conservative principles and reach across the aisle.........someone like....say......John McCain?!? If Romney is the nominee, which I still think is likely, we will see just how that works out. Will the independents continue on their suicide mission with the Messiah or go with a squishy moderate conservative? Time will tell..........

McCain (because you brought him up) does not (did not) have the skills that a nation in economic stress needs to get the disaster course reversed.  Romney has those skills.  Is he a social moderate… probably?

He correctly acknowledged that the State of Massachusetts had the right (as provided by the 10th Amendment) to elect universal health care by referendum.  This does NOT mean that he buys into it as a viable or legal FEDERAL mandate… as he has so stated.

Left hemispherical “social” issues, besides being a lightning rod for the hysterical, will NEVER be resolved through legislation.

Right hemispherical, “fiscal” issues can be resolved through application of historically proven and justified methods… some of which will be excruciating.  Had we not procrastinated over these past three decades… such methods could have been merely painful. Now we need an experienced expert in large scale fiscal recovery.  Do you suppose him to be Santorum?

“Socially conservative?”  That I am… but, I am also a realist and I will stuff such (morally superior) emotions in favor of the survival of our nation.  I will defer to men and women to make personal decisions about contraception. I will defer to women to make personal decisions about abortion.

I expect that every voting citizen reflects on prioritization and finds that the viability of our constitutionally derived nation is the only foundation for the resolution of all of the other subordinate issues.

I am not the one wringing my hands and palpitating that any of the GOP candidates want to take away contraception. That is for the gullible among us. On social issues either Santorum or Romney are acceptable to me. If the economy is the big issue in November, which it should be if people are paying attention and educating themselves instead of watching the government media, then Romney is a fine candidate. But be advised, if he wins he will not be as fiscally conservative as he claims to be. He is a big government, moderate Republican. Fortunately, unlike the Teleprompter in Chief, he understands economics and the way the economy really works which will temper his actions.

“He [Romney] is a big government, moderate Republican”  MM, please explain this description.

Because he accepted the will of the Massachusetts voters with respect to universal healthcare does not make him big government.  if you research his history with Bain Capital, he facilitates lean and efficient operations and capital (this should make the entitlement class quiver).   That is, he will spin off or squelch anything which is ineffective or counterproductive.

The difference is that he will be making sure you get more out of YOUR money... rather than his.

What I mean by "Big Government" is he will be in the same vein as W. Instead of seeking a size and scope of federal government consistent with the limited nature envisioned by the founders, his emphasis is on a more effective and efficient federal government. He does not believe in a limited federal government, nor does Santorum..or Gingrich...etc. Probably the only one of the crowd that does is Ron Paul, and unfortunately he extends that to being an isolationist in the one area of federal government that should be big, our national defense. Believe me, if Romney is the nominee and wins he is going to drive fiscal conservatives crazy and he will have plenty of willing accomplices in congress. He just won't be anywhere near as bad as the current POTUS who is a fiscal train wreck.

Though it is not my perception, I understand yours.

I think Romney sees government as too big and inefficient, Romney will revert to his business nature… and trim it.  On that, he is running his campaign.

Hope you are right but I think even Hound will tell you that is much easier said than done. The Bureaucracy will always be there and its natural inclination is to grow in size, budget and power regardless of the politicians that come and go. It will take a lot of courage combined with a willing congress to do anything significant. I'm not optimistic and will be happy just to see our downward spiral into oblivion stalled until the next charlatan comes along and fools the independents.

Romney’s position on conservatism in his own words:

“Some people study it and come to know conservatism by their readings. I have actually lived conservatism in my life, in my home, in my family, in my faith* and also in business. You know, if you are not a fiscal conservative in business, you know, you will go out of business. And of course, I was able to demonstrate my conservatism as the governor of my state. We balanced the budget every year for four years. We have put in place a rainy day fund. Cut taxes 19 times. And some big social issues came to the fore in my state. Like same-sex marriage and embryo farming. These are battles I led the charge for conservative values.”

“…first of all, I said nothing about his [Santorum’s] statements on contraception. And secondly, with regards to our health care plan in my state, it was the court that established the requirements of abortion. Not the legislation. There is no mention in the legislation whatsoever of abortion.”

“I was a conservative governor, I described some of the ways I have done that, and how I fought for conservative social values, conservative economic values. Balance[d] the budget every year. Actually, during my term in office, the budget in Massachusetts grew more slowly than the rate of inflation.”

I am unable to make the change. What if, going forward, I drop Rev and refer to JJ as the poster child of race baiting, class conflict fomenting, money grubbing, Chicago style extortionist. Should be easy to identify as there can't possibly be more than one. Oh wait, never mind.

Maj, it is obvious who you will be voting for and I may even join you......but I want you to take note of my observations about Romney.  If he loses because the economy is no longer the issue due to the lies of Oblamer and the government media I will say I told you so.  And if he wins and turns into a squishy moderate, big government type I will say I told you so.

And if he turns out to win and governs as a fiscal and social conservative you can say I told you so and I will raise a toast to your prescience!  I would love nothing more!

…and, If Romney does not win the nomination, I will cast my vote in favor of the conservative who does.  I WILL NOT VOTE FOR A THIRD PARTY CANDIDATE… A VOTE FOR OBAMA.

My preference is for a “git ‘er done” fiscal conservative over an “inside the beltway” convert.  In any event, Obama’s destruction of our nation needs to be terminated in 21012.

Talullahhound, I do remember but I'm looking foreward not back. Their are not any of the candidates without something to bring up about their past that they wish could just disappear. I think that Newt is the best in the field to help lead us out of this mess were in. Talullahhound, I may be very close to your age group but just have a little different background.
