Other than the one week with claims at 399,000 we have been over 400K for what seems like months. Watch for the unemployment rate to stay steady or even drop a little as people give up and leave the job market altogether out of despair. I had to let another person go this week and am hoping to go for a few weeks without more layoffs. I don't care what the so-called experts say we are back in recession. I am sure they will figure that out in 6 months or so when they pull their heads out of their academic rear ends.......its no wonder these so-called experts that are constantly surprised by the bad economic news are never named. The percentage of people that have been without work for over 6 months is growing steadily and is the most alarming problem. HOPEless and CHANGE for the worse......is it November 2012 yet?

Can't rely on statistics, because statistics are manipulated. I suspect more people are out of work than the statistics show, because some people have just given up. I have one friend who has been out of work for over 6 months. She continues to look, has gone on interviews, but the market is so competitive, she hasn't been successful so far. Right now, she is living on her savings. Heaven knows how many jobs are on the fence right now. You know, back in the 80's there were a lot of articles about how our economy was changing from manufacturing to a service economy. I also remember reading articles that the future was going to be "independent" consultants who would hire out for projects, but were basically self employed.

I think you are right about people giving up on the job market although I have no idea how they manage. That is why we continue to see 400K plus weekly job losses and then they report unemployment dropping 0.1%. It makes no sense until you realize that this only measures those actively looking. If you look at the BLS numbers it is even more depressing, especially when you look at unemployment numbers for those under 25. Under 25 and black? Close to 50% which is stunning. No wonder they are running around in packs and beating up white people. They need to look at themselves and ask what it is they are missing in the job market that makes them so unemployable. But here's the real kicker on the unemployment numbers (from memory and may not be exactly the numbers as reported). No high school diploma - 15% High school diploma - 10% Some college or associates degree - 7% College degree - less than 5%.

I saw last evening on the news that the CBO came out with their projection based on current economic policy and that they did not project unemployment breaking 8% until mid 2014.  They had it at 8.7% as of November 2012.

Who knows if they will be right ... but the take away is that there is nothing going on with current policy that is working to stimulate the economy and get businesses to create jobs.   They blew their wad with the $800 billion give away that provided a short term boost, but there was so many negative policy changes and new regulation that stopped any momentum ... including banking, obamacare, epa, suing Boing, drilling ban, etc, etc, etc

It is so sad ... I feel bad for the people that bought the snake oil sales pitch.

First, my sympathies lie with the victims of the idiocrats that voted for oblamer, not with those that bought the snake oil. Second, seeing more disclosure with greater frequency of long term unemployed shifting to Socil Security disability. The "news" last weekend was the looming insolvency of the disability program. Third, the reported unemployment rate, one of a handful available, is based on telephone surveys. You would think if the feds can track a tainted steak to a cow birthed in Argentina, they would be able to provide real numbers. Finally, if unemployment checks and food stamps are really stimilus, as proclaimed by Pelosi and Vilisak, why, with the explosion of both programs, does our GDP hover close to zero?

"I feel bad for the people that bought the snake oil sales pitch."

I don't!  In my sixty-eight years of observation, those folks will always make the wrong decision.  No amount of facts and common sense will ever change their thinking process.  They will forever be of the genus of cud-chewing mammals that are timid, defenseless and easily led. (I plagarized a portion of that statement from the dictionary...look under sheep)

But, sheep are otherwise useful. Can the same be said for those that bought the snake oil sales pitch?

No!! They will forever wander aimlessly in the fields of kudzu and fireants, awaiting the salvation of some government elixir!

alright, alright ... :)   They got what they voted for ... now they can hope there is change again, so we can get leadership back in Washington to start putting us on the right track.

I just was having a compassionate momment that so many bought the hope and change with no plan or specifics ... now they are far worse off ... even they Unions are starting to distance themselves from Oblamer.

I was watching Hanity last night and on his panel he had a dem that was an Obama supporter ... he was mouthing off that we will see what the polls say in 6 months once it is clear who his running mate will be.  So one of the other guest said what will he run on ... what will he tell the american people he accomplished and why they should stick with him and give him another 4 years of directionless leadership and failed policies?

His response ... it is the first administration with no major scandals ... even though that is not 100% true ... the other guests laughed and said that's it, that's all you have?   That really means a lot to the unemployed.

They let the " no major scandals " comment pass? Oblamers DoJ with "operation Fast and Furious" doesn't count? DHS ripping diapers off a 95 year old wheelchair bound woman isn't scandalous? Fraud associated with Pigford II? The green jobs stimulus monies going to China? Rewriting bankruptcy law to screw bondholders while paying back political allies? Failure to account for nearly $500 billion in stimulus spending? Overturning the NBP ruling to ALLOW black on white voter intimidation? Sustained shutdown of Gulf drilling? Ignoring court orders repeatedly? Bypassing constitutional law with Executive Orders? Wide body at the WH (a private citizen) reportedly spending over $10 million on vacations with a bigger support staff than any president until Eisenhower? A pervert leading the Dept of Education? Czars that have openly advocated for the overthrow of our government? The volume of oblamercare waivers? Suing states for attempting to fill the constitutionally mandated roles the feds abdicate? Sustained failure to follow US law? Disclosure of Seal Team Six and their role in taking out bin Laden? Clinton Ayers and Dorn, along with the Google team spending 3 months in N Africa stiirring the pot for the Arab Spring? WTH qualifies as a scandal? Are we immune to the realities? With the scandal bar this low, Watergate would have been a 1 day page 5 story, while Whitewater and Iran Contra wouldn't have received any ink.
