What a surprise that seven of the ten wealthiest counties surround Washington, DC. Nothing more need be said about the concentration of power and wealth in our federal government. The other three are around NYC. Kind of a sad metaphor for the future of our country and another great argument for a smaller, less intrusive federal government.

Doesn't surprise me that some of the richest would be in the DC area (all those lobbyists), and NYC, but what about LA, Dallas and Phoenix, AZ? I thought Scottsdale had the highest concentration of millionaires in the country.

Hound, I think it was based on median or average income numbers so while there may be a lot of millionaires they don't skew the income levels enough to make the top ten.

I'm really surprised then about DC. Of course there are a lot of wealthy people there, but I wouldn't think it is disportionate to the rest of the country. While there are a lot more two income families, the majority of people either work for the government or with the government -- and despite what you read in the papers about high government salaries, compared to the cost of living there, the incomes are not incredibly high. It's a very expensive place to live.

You make a good point about cost of living but your view is the tail wagging the dog. The reason the cost of living is so high around D.C. is the demand driven by high income residents. Remember, these are counties in Virginia and Maryland that surround D.C., not D.C. itself. You are right about lawyers, lobbyists, etc. but of all government workers you can bet there are tons of high G levels that work in D.C. and live in VA and MD.

I suspect that they are talking about Potomac MD (lots of McMansions), McLean, VA (ditto), Fairfax VA, Montgomery County MD, maybe a couple of others (I'm trying to think of the name of the county in the Dulles high technology corrider, but I'm drawing a blank). But, keep in mind that there are a lot of highly educated people concentrated there too. (One of the reasons that some of the public schools there are excellent). Even with the devaluation of home prices, homes (even a moderate home) are still very expensive, property taxes are very high, child care costs are astronomical. It's a very odd place in a lot of ways. But, you know, for the most part, "money" isn't really the issue there like it is in a lot a metro areas. It's really more about power, and other than the lobbyists (a much different breed), displays of wealth are not admired. In fact, just the opposite. So people don't spend money as obviously as they do in other places. Maybe just more people save and invest their money and that makes more millionaires.

Loudon is the county I was thinking about. (Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most... LOL)
