I think the SC Lt. Governor said what 75% of the citizens of this country believe. CNN said that he was comparing welfare recipients to "animals". The liberal media is having a ball with these statements. They are concentrating on a few words and totally disregarding the message.

In this country and even within parts of my family, we have created third and fourth generation welfare experts. These citizens, who also vote but do not work, have housing allowances, free pharmaceuticals, free medical, food stamps, no charge for baby deliveries, free telephones, etc. Why would they want to change? They will all tell you that they love Obama and are waiting for Obama Money.

At a town hall meeting Thursday, Bauer, who is running for governor in his own right now that Sanford is term-limited, said: "My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed! You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don't think too much further than that."

Sorry to correct his or your granny, but stray animals will breed whether you feed them or not. Eating and reproducing are two completely different biological needs. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

I actually don't like this analogy but not for the reason that Hound espoused. He is trying to create an argument that in the hierarchy of needs, once you fulfill the basic needs (food and shelter) they will pursue secondary needs (reproduction). It is a point being made very crudely and is really not the issue.

The problem with welfare is that it robs people of their dignity and engenders an entitlement mentality that has been demonstrated to perpetuate generationaly. This was amply demonstrated when 600,000 people in Wisconsin left the welfare roles and got a job before the state even implemented welfare reform. They simply got off their butts and went out and got a job when they thought the dole was ending. And this from multi-generational welfare recipients.

Welfare should be limited and temporary and not provide a long-term, permanent source of income for those who are able bodied and can work but simply choose not to. It should not reward bad behavior like giving checks to teenagers when they have a baby, etc. In any event it is in my view off the mark and when put in this way becomes a lightning rod for criticism.

Hound

Neither my grandfather, my "Granny", nor my wife's grandparents were recipients of any type of welfare. They survived the great depression, always worked, and were not hungry because they planned ahead - IE, a garden. The original homeplace started out as one room and became larger with time and hours of sweat. None of them knew what a home mortgage was.

The strange thing is that the family was 100% Democrat. Can you believe that! Senator Estes Keauffer, Senator Russel, Senator Sparkman, were actively supported in their campaigns. I can't say that for the older Gore.

Then, along came the beginning of the Democrats that we know today. Help us Lord - what happened! Who was the daddy? Lyndon Johnson. Do you remember the concept of the Great Society under Lyndon Johnson. We can trace 90% of today's welfare problems back to Lyndon's crowd.

Citizens born after 1960 became addicts and totally depended on governmental assistance. And they became very literate, as I reported in the earlier post, on how to survive without working. Their vote was always indebted to the one who supported continuation of their lifestyle. Is it different today?

It should be a temporary fix to a temporary problem. If we could stop wasting money on people who could and should be out working, just think of what could be done with that money.

Very generous indeed.

Lotowner, my grandparents on my father's side were farmers. They lived through the depression too and never went hungry. In fact, they fed a good portion of the extended family too, every Sunday.
My mother's parents were Irish immigrants, but they both worked until the day they died -- both of them way too young.

Being "on the dole" used to be an embarassment.
I don't know if we can lay it all at the feet of Lyndon Johnson. Yes, he pressed for the legislation when he was in office, but since these things don't happen overnight, I suspect there was support for it well before his Presidency. I don't know that the original intent of the legislation and the programs were what it has evolved into. Keep in mind too, that at the time the majority of women did not have the job opportunities that are open to them today -- back then, if your husband died, became disabled or left you, there weren't a lot of options. Of course, that has changed now.

I still believe that in a land of plenty it is wrong that people go hungry, but I don't believe in long term welfare, and medicaid. Of course, I also don't believe that people should be able to declare bankruptsy with the ease that they are currently able to do it, either.
