Anyone have a tried and true way to get work people around Lake Martin to return your call?
I have extensive landscaping work to be done -- including a water feature and a fireplace -- and I know who I would like to hire to do it -- but I can't get them to call me back. I call, explain what I'm seeking, and leave my various numbers, but get no call backs. I know it's a busy time of year for landscapers, but even if they called back to say they're not interested, or couldn't get to me until July, that would be okay. I'd just like to get in the queue.

We went through the same kind of thing when we had the basic landscape put in and ended up hiring the only one (out of 4 we contacted) to respond. I don't live in one of the "premiere" communities, but I do have money to spend.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Tell them you voted for McCain and Palin.

Is Cathouse Marine, Garden Equipment, and Fish Fryin' LLC - Steve is diversifying into lawn care now. If Feb has some old power equipment that have some repairs needed ..... lookout water feature - Hoover Dam would look small compared to your project after CAT goes at it.

Other than him - we run into the same thing at the lake and up at the house - IF someone shows up to see what we want, we do not have much luck with getting quotes, and less with getting work done.

With the economy the way it is I have become my own landscaper - You might try Price Landscaping. He has a shop on 63 just south of the road to Wind Creek, the number on his sign is his cell and he has always answered it when I have called him.

For the fireplace you should try David Reeves - You will not meet a nicer guy - I think he is in the Eclectic phone book.

If you cannot find the numbers email me this weekend and I will send them to you.

I have tried that and it does not work either - they still do not show back up to DO the work. The Ron Paul stickers seemed to confuse all who showed, and the Obama stickers made all who showed up angry.

Actually, they do call back eventually. A few years ago I called to get a new canvas mooring cover. It was in the fall and I told them that they had all winter to get it done. When spring came....no new cover. About a year and a half later, I got a message that they were ready to make my new cover.

I am glad to hear I am not the only one regularly dissed by landscape companies. Where we live we get three business cards a week from them on our mailbox and when you call with a project no one calls back. I would say that this is their busiest time of year with annual maintenance so maybe they just can't get to the job and are not calling back for that reason.

One option, and I know the purists will hate to hear it, is to try the Home Depot at the Opelika exit. If you buy the materials there they may hook you up with one of their contractors. Please, no hate mail for my suggestion......

I'm pretty sure the Alex City and Sylacauga Home Depot's would also be willing to work with you to recommend contractors.

The issue with the ones that get left at your house is that they are not really landscape companies, but folks wanting to charge excessive rates to cut and edge your lawn.

It helps to know I'm not alone...

I have some challenges that are above and beyond the normal planting trees and shrubs. The last company I've been dealing with couldn't follow a landscape design, and in my opinion, didn't know how to plant things (planting too close together, and roots half out of the hole on a hill.) I really need someone with some creative ideas and know how to do what needs to be done. I want to put in a small waterfall and would like to find someone that can design a way to put in an outdoor fireplace without it just looking like someone plopped it down.
I didn't intend to wait this long to call someone, but some of the hardscape retaining walls took longer than I thought as they were part of a garage building project.

I'd hate to think I'd have to go to Mobile to find someone that could do my job. I find the further they have to travel, the less likely they will actually come do the job.

I did use a great guy named Aaron Alexander....he did some rock steps and some grading. He usually has an add in Lake magazine.

I have had similar problems ... is everyone really that busy? I actually had work done and was completed over 2 weeks ago (in third week now). I have called the guy 3 times asking for a bill. He did not leave one when finished and has not called me back. i spoke to his wife and she said he is really busy and behind on his paperwork.

But come on ... if he is that busy, hire someone to work up invoices and send them out.

just to add to the previous post ... I think it is great that everyone is so nice and trust worthy, but it is almost too laid back. Totally the opposite in Atlanta ... contractors show up, but then they want 30% in advance and you have to fight to get them to start the work.

We have had the same problems and either we end up doing the work ourselves or we bring our contractors from North Ga down with us. It hasn't just been for landscaping either. Don't know why it's so hard to get people to work or even call you back, but I'm glad if their business is that booming.
