I have a Sumerset houseboat equipped with a Xantrex 2500 freedom inverter powered by 6, 6V lead cell golf cart batteries. The batteried are located in the fromt part of the hull, forward of the cabin bulkhead. This bulkhead is not sealed from teh crawl space underneath the floor. For a couple of years we have had issues with our CO alarms going of, sometimes hours after we were back in dock and had no engines running. This past weekend was no exception. On Saturday night the digital alarms showed up to 90 ppm, but once doors were opened the went back to zero. Same thing Sunday, but even higher readings. I had purchased a Fluke CO detector to try to help us find the problem. It read between 24 and 40. On Monday we arrived back at the dock around 3:30. At 5 the readings began to creep up and finally topped out around 110. We again aired the cabin out but this time it was a VERY slow process. As we began to pack up to go home I was storing some items in the compartment with the batteries and noticed a strong acid smell. I then heard the batteries gurgling. I took the Fluke meter on a whim and checked the space. Even with the hatch open I immediately got a reading of over 250. I left the hatch open with a fan blowing out. Today I was told by the inverter distributor in our area that the sounds were normal in this setup, but that the batteries should be in an enclosure vented to the outside. This is where I need help. I can run the vent pipe and could build a plywood box, but there has to be something better available. I need a 24" x 24" x 14" box I can seal, except for the vents to the outside. Any suggestions?

Try to find a Yeti ice chest that is the right size to hold the batteries or talk to the battery guy and get batteries that are not lead acid
