I heard it first from MOMO, but it was confirmed today on Sinclairs facebook page that the Kowliga restaurant has closed for good.  Refer any questions to Russell Lands.  A new restaurant will be opening Spring of 2013.  So much for the facts, now for some speculation; is Cecil's re-opening in A/C?  Could they be moving to the lake?

Cecil's (Alexander City) has repeatedly stated they are not coming to Lake Martin. Not interested ! Oscar's on east side has repeatedly stated they are not interested in a Kowaliga location. Got all they can handle now. Maybe we'll have to settle on the great little seafood shop, Captain D's-- it would be better than Sinclair's.

Hey, Red Lobster would be fine.  Better yet would be a new chain call "Larry, Larry & Larry.....and John"

Thanks George!  That rumor has been going around so long I didn't know if it was true or not and I knew you would find out.  I surely hope they find someone worthy of such a GREAT location.

well we definitely need some options--Sinclairs quality had gone down while prices way up-all -due to a lack of competition. hope Russell is smart & doesnt try to make it a mini Springhouse with pricey burgers, etc. we need something similar to Niffers at this end of lake--good food, good service, reasonable prices, good menu

that Russell would want to operate a restaurant. That's vertical integration gone a little sideways.

Agree wholeheartedly....the last time we were there about three weeks ago we sent back two Margaritas because they didn't taste like they had tequila in them....remade ones weren't any better.  Conversation with the server discovered their well tequila was......ARISTOCRAT!  We didn't even know Aristocrat made a "tequila".  We do know that Aristocrat vodka is the drink of choice by youngsters looking for a cheap drunk devoid of taste.  Shudda known something was up.

We have stopped going for the last 2-3 years.  Somebody needs to survey the public or check the resturants on the other side of the lake to see what is successful.  Of course, the new owners have to deal with Russell.  I heard that is the reason Cecil's did not come back.

I would hate to know I had to deal with them as well

I heard from a good source that the new restaurant will be called Kowliga Restaurant and the vision is to be the same as Kowliga 30 yeard ago, simple menu, moderate prices, good service (I hope no carpet on the ceiling).  Russell Lands will own it and Rob McDaniel, GM/Chef of Springhouse, will manage/oversee the operation.  That one fact tells me that the quality of the food and service will be greatly improved.  I look forward to returning to Kowliga Restaurant.

They wanted to try back in 1999, after G. Cecil had proved that a restaurant operated at the Kowaliga location could make a lot of money. But he wouldn't back out of the lease, and wouldn't let them jack up the remaining 8 years without a fight. Then one night after a final discussion, the old place mysteriously caught on fire. Funny how they managed to save the statue, and some of the decor that had been inside, but the building was nothing but ashes. Even funnier that the FD was ordered to extinguish a smoldering attic fire by using giant fans.
