If you are going to travel out of state it is a good idea just to keep the locals from stopping you, and I think you have to have one if it is a two axel or more.

In Alabama it is impossible to buy a boat trailer tag, they simply do not exist.Only mobile home and utility trailers have tags. If you travel out of state and get pulled over for no tag,if the officer sees you are from Alabama,he will send you on your way,no ticket. We deliver boats all over the country with no tags, never had an issue.

I was told by the Tag Office that becuase in Alabama your boat is registered every year that is why they don't issue a tag for the trailer. I lived in Georgia before moving here. They register every 4 years. Therfore, they isuue boat trailer tags. I don't know that this is fact. But, This is what I was told..LOL

The reason you cannot buy a boat trailer tag in Alabama is steeped in old politics. In the early 70's a bill was introduced in the legislature to require tags on all trailers(mobile homes, utility and boat trailers) Several senators were boat owners, and they exempted boat trailers, and the exemption exists to this day.Very few things change in Montgomery, even today.

I believe utility trailers are exempted too if used strictly for farm purposes.

Took my boat to Florida a few years ago. Florida state trooper pulled me over near Tallahassee. In my rear view mirror, could see the glee in my eyes as he walked up. The glee diminished when he passed the back on my truck and saw the Alabama tag. He asked and I told him we did not have to have a boat trailer tag in Alabama. He said he did not know that. I gave him the Alabama Water Patrol phone number and told him he could call if he desired. After a little mumbling, he said "Have a good trip".
Outcome might have been different with another trooper.
