Whats a good (affordable) side scan sonar?

I live on the lake but, I think I only qualify to be a weekend fisherman. My nephew comes from Atlanta and we chase fish all weekend and have little luck. I am interested in a side scan sonar (new or used) to help us find underwater structure and lots of fish (crappy, bass & stripe).
Any ideas on where to start?

I believe Hummingbird came out with the first one, but I like Lowrance products better. Go to their web sites and compare.I don't have a side scan, but Deckhand does (Lowrance), so maybe he will chime in.

Bass Pro has working models (demonstration mode) on display so you can get a good idea of what you like / don't like as well as comaprative pricing.

Stripernut is correct, it is a matter of preference. I prefer Lowrance, the pixels are sharper on the color units. Their new units have a structure scan overlay feature of the gps side. another key is to get a good sd chip like navionics to show contours. Good suggestion from Mountain man, Bass Pro has both units and you can compare feature, cost, etc. The hardest decision may be deciding exactly whay you want for the price range you want to spend for the time on the water (unless you have no limitations. The new 12 inch lowrance has it all for $3400 but for an occasional fisherman it may be a little pricey. Since I fish multiple days a week and also guide for stripers, if you can't find em, you usually can't catch em but that is no guarantee, it is still fishing not catching. Good luck.

I like Lowrance. I,m looking at the HDS5 for about $1000. I am just a weekend fisherman. My wife sits in back while I run the trolling motor and we talk while I fish docks and structure. I just want to go out and scan the lake and mark my spots so I can turn around and hit 5 or 10 areas when we are out. Headed to ATL this weekend and will have plenty of places to check them out such as, Bass Pro, Academy, Dicks & more.... No hurry to buy just gotta start looking ...

Touch is new for 2013 and is a 16:9 screen similar to a HDTV while the Gen2 non touch is similar to the older tvs 4:3.
The 83/200 transducer is for lakes and inland water. The 50/200 is for Great Lakes and deeper water offshore. I would suggest the 83/200.
If you want side scan, 000-10869-001 is a bundle that includes the Gen2 7 unit, the side scan module that you will need to mount, the 83/200 transducer, and the transducer for the side scan. Lowrance has a $300 rebate if you buy it before April 7.
The 000-10765-001 includes the Gen2 7 Touch unit with side scan built into the unit. There is no separate module you need to mount as it is built in, and the 83/200 transducer. With this unit, you need to buy the side scan transducer which lists for $250 number 000-10802-001.
000-10778-001 includes the Gen2 7 Touch unit with side scan built into the unit. There is no separate module you need to mount as it is built in, and the 83/200 transducer. The side scan transducer is also included in the bundle.
Another option if you do not want side scan, is the Elite 7 HDI with down scan but not side scan. It shows the same type image as side scan but under the boat and not out to the side. It is less expensive around $700-800 list price.
There are some saving online for the various units. Feel free to email me.
