Iran has called on Obama to show the world he is willing to change the US behavior and withdraw immediately from Iraq and Afghanistan. Then "North Korea" issued a statement that they would be interested in "negotiating" with Obama. Umm what exactly does tiny North korea have to negotiate? Carter, another great president, negotiated with them and they never kept there word.
It will be fun to see how he starts to react .... he is now getting top level security briefings so he has more knowledge than ever before.

Never met a dictator he didn't like. Why he gets airtime is totally beyond me. Probably the worst president we ever had.

Bad President, good statesman. Richard Nixon -- bad President- great statesman.
Why do y'all fear talking so much? Are y'all in favor of just bombing the stew out of them? Threatening them? Remember the "axis of evil"? After that, they really stepped up their nuclear programs -- probably thinking that the US was going to attack them at any time. Buillying doesn't work. Threatening doesn't work. When you were growing up, did y'all just punch anyone who looked at you crossways?
Before you start criticizing, maybe you should give a new approach a chance.

It is not bullying ... it is dealing from strength. We are bullied with oil embargos, hostage situations, terrorist attacks.
Lybia throught they could get away with it and Regan planted a bomb in his livingroom and now they have been peaceful, we have not bothered them again or them us. In fact there is very good cooperative relations.

Yeah, Cater's numerous and relentless conversations with Castro have sure proven fruitful to Cubans. Even so, I don't recall us bombing Cuba...... yet. Not saying talking is a bad thing. It's just some folks don't respond to anything other than force. But Kumbaya is always worth a try.
|
It's easy to be strong with weapons. So you would put a bomb into Iran and North Korea? Is that what you are saying?
BTW, it is L-I-B-Y-A. And I seem to recall that they were hosting terrorist training camps. And wasn't it in retaliation for them launching a terrorist hit -- was that one on our soldiers in Lebanon?

Not Kumbaya. If you talk to people you find out what their concerns are, and sometimes you find out their weakness. You put forth your position. You cannot win over the world by being the biggest bully on the block. Yes, there is a time and place for a show of force, but even our military operates with alliances. We can't really afford to go it alone anymore.

Maybe it's just me but, I think the concerns, intentions, etc. of the Muslims are fairly transparent and I really don't think any meaningful dialogue is going to change their mind. Realistically, they would have to re-write their Bible.

Talk is cheap. I think you will see that many countries will support a new policy under Obama and will support strong embargos if talks fail. Our reputation of going it alone hasn't really worked. The North Koreans faced 6 nations united against their nukes. But, until we agreed to remove them from the terroist list did they finally agree to dismantle their nukes.
That is some indication that talk and negotiation do have a place in world affairs with your enemies. The theory that you are with or against us is not diplomacy. Bill Richardson would make a terrific Secretary of State. He has great skills.
By putting a defensive missile shield on the Russian border, Russia has responded by putting missiles on the Polish border. Now, what is the next step?? Is this the crisis that Biden spoke about??

The only concern Iran has is the fact that Isreal still exists!! Ahmadinejad stated in New York City in September ( at the UN fall opening) that the problems on wall street are to be blamed on American military actions abroad and that Isreal is doomed like "an airplane that has lost thier engine". Ahmadinejad is willing to let Iran become a marter state!! If he could get his hands on a nuke and lob it over to Tel Aviv he would do it in an instant, even if he knew that they would respond with a nuke strike to Tehran, because he believes all of the people of Tehran go to heaven and all of the people of Tel Aviv will not.
Tell me Hound how in the he!! do you reason and listen to the concerns of people like that??

Everything you said about Iran's President is true. And I'm not so sure they aren't very close to having a nuclear weapon. Part of me thinks he is a nut case, part of me thinks he is just looking for attention. He is desperate to be seen as a major leader. Arabs don't like or trust the Persians either. I have no idea whether talking to him will do any good. But, I think it is worth a try. What do you think we have to lose by doing so?
We can always nuke them later.

So, I am guessing Hound that by your post that if we had tea with the taliban then Sept. 11th would have never happened? Do you understand, they don't hate us because we think we are stronger? They declared a holy war on us... our people.

No, I don't think that at all. I think we did the right thing after 9/11. I only wish our intelligence nets had been stronger that it didn't happen at all. I'm trying to remember -- didn't we recognize the Taliban as the legimate government of Afghanistan when they took over after the Russians left? I don't know if we knew they were hosting Terrorist training camps at that point - but I know we got very concerned about their human rights policies as soon as they started shutting down schools.
I think you have to judge who you are dealing with. I don't think North Korea is planning to attack the US. As you well know, North Korea has a major problem with a starving population. Apparently, North Korea does stuff to leverage getting food handouts for their people. I think it would suit our interests to talk with the Chinese. I don't think they are in danger of attacking us (unless we do something major with Taiwan) but they have a lot to do with our economy.
I just don't know about Iran. I hear the rhetoric, but I've also read that the majority of Iranians like America. So will he continue in power? You know the French have a strong business relationship with Iran? If we go at it with Iran, we'll likely have to go it alone.

I have to tell you that I have no great love for Israel for a reason I can't get into here. Something that harmed the US. It has nothing to do with religion, but with the Israeli government. Let's just say they haven't always been a great friend to the US.

I believe the reason the US has always been a friend to Israel is because in the Bible it states that Israel is the apple of the Lord's eye. It also says that a large military force will come up against Israel, and God will rain down fire upon them. Killing all that rise up against it. There may be other reasons, but to me that one is the best.
Personally, I will be on the side of the Lord, but hey that may just be me!

Forget Israel. Say Ahmadinejad had a nuke he could put on a ship and float it up the Hudson or into San Francisco Bay and we lose an entire city. Do you not think he would do it in a heartbeat?? Negotiations and talking are great things, but they have to take place between sane people, and I hate to tell you this man ain't sane.

Well, as go the French these days goes the EU. I guess my point is that not everyone feels as strongly about Iran as we do. Most of the time, they have ignored our "do not undercut" (our position on refusing to make the sale of a sensitive military technology) position when it comes to some countries we have real concerns about.

Yeah, I hear what you are saying. I'm not saying I don't think they have a right to exist. I'm just saying that some of the things they do don't support US national security, for their own ecomomic issues.

I don't know what he would do. That's what I'm saying -- I don't know if he is really a legitiment threat or if he is just mouthy and looking for attention.
But hey, push the button and nuke him now. We'll let God (Allah) sort him out.
