Could someone please give me the skinny on the TV changes coming in a year or so? I keep seeing the commercials by Direct TV where they claim they are the only way to go. I have Comlink cable, from somewhere. How will we be affected? What is the deal with the $40 per TV set that the govt will be giving away? Will Washington have a special hearing on this and get it stoppped? Why is it happening anyway? HELP!! Will I still be able to see the Colbert Report? and college football?

The FCC is mandating it, just as they mandated cellular signals to be all digital by Jan 1, 2008. All cell signals are now digital. Digital signals free up the radio frequency spectrum for use for other technologies.

With the converter box your analog TV tuner will be able to use the digital signal from the cable company.

Or, just buy a new TV.

The converter box will allow reception of OFF-AIR digital TV signals, and not necessarily those from a cable system since the signal format is normally different from an off air signal.
The converter coupon will cover about half the cost of the box when they hit the stores in March 2008 or so.
The FCC is mandating Feb 2009 as the date that analog TV (ie, WSFA's channel 12 service that's been there for years) is cut off. The new digital signals are on other channels, but might revert back to the old analog channel in a digital transmission format after the analog is cut off.
Be sure any new TV you buy has a ATSC tuner. Putting up an outdoor antenna will allow reception of all of the local channels. Satellite and Cable TV often doesn't carry the additional digital channels from the local stations.
