"Yes, I am proud of my Southern Heritage, and yes, I understand why someone like you would not understand.  My ancestors came to the South in the early 1700s, settled here and built a heritage...no, you wouldn't understand.  My great grandfather died as a soldier during the War Between the States.  Does the South mean a lot to me, yes it does, and it means a lot to many, many other people in the South.  Is the South about slavery, as you stated....absolutely not....I never met a slave...have you?  You have no concept or understanding of anything you post about....it must be a lonely world."

No one questions that that you are proud of your heritage....but your heritage segregated the south for years after the war ended. Why?

Why did blacks have to have sit ins in the 60s to pee in a bathroom? To sit at a counter to eat? To require US Marshals to integrate the U of A? Some of it continues today with the need for peaceful protests.

We fought Germany, Japan, China, and Vietnam and have better relations with them than between many rebels and yankees in the USA. Why??? Heritage as evidenced by the Confederate flag.

Yankees have a heritage that we are proud of it too, but we call it the Stars and Stripes.

Goofy, I have no idea what you are talking about with respect to southerners.  I've lived in the states of Washington, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas and Georgia and have spent the most time in the south and I have found southerners to be the most friendly, gracious, kind, easy to get along with people in the country regardless of their race, creed sexual orentation.  And I have traveled to probably every state in the Union and I can assure you southerners are more friendly and less bigoted than the people I've met in northeastern states, including your home state of New Jersey which is not exactly known for its hospitality or friendliness.  You are the bigot here....bigoted against southern people.

And as for slavery and segregation and Jim Crow and opposing civil rights, those were all done by Democrats.

While I would agree with you on the surface - Southerners are very friendly.  However, I don't think they are "gay friendly" for the most part.  Most Southerners I have met think gay people are some sort of perversion and see it as a lifestyle choice, instead of a biological reality.  Additionally, my observation is that while you don't see a lot of overt racism, you do not see overlapping social circles, like you do in the North.  You do not see as many interracial marriages and I doubt anyone I know here has ever actually had a black or a gay person to their house as a guest.  In the 12 years I have been here, I have seen 5 instances of overt racism and because you don't see it often, it really stands out to me.  But if you are white and straight, there are few places more friendly than the South and I do admire the way they reach out and take immediate action when something bad happens

I don't know about around the lake but it sounds like most of your experience in the south is in more rural areas.  I can tell you in the urban areas there are a significant number of interracial couples.  Heck, my daughter went to prom her senior year with a very nice guy from her class who was black and no one cared one bit, including me.  One of my son's best friends is married to a black woman.  My nieve is married to black guy who is so conservative he makes me look like a flaming liberal.  It is very common here and no one even bats an eye, nor should they.  But I grew up in a small town in SE PA and I can tell you interracial dating and marriage was not seen in a positive light but I assume things have changed there as well.

As for homosexuality, indeed more southerners are committed Christians and oppose things like gay marriage.  And again, if you live in a rural area versus an urban one you can be sure there is a different view of things.  And that isn't just in the south.  It is everywhere.  Atlanta is about as gay a town as they come....just spend an afternoon in Piedmont Park for a dose of reality.  What you ascribe to the south is actually an issue of urban versus rural.

But we agree that southerners are as a general rule much friendlier and more hospitable that the northeast or midwest, regardless of race. And I try every day to mimic it.  It's why I often pick up a nice young African American man that walks from the bus stop to work in a building in our office park, especially when its raining.  It's what southern people do and I like that part of their heritage and the northeast could learn something from them.

I will say it has improved but racism and gay haters are both around.  Bubba knows well that he is not universally liked in the nascar.  But the world has since Eden has had hatred amoung people's, just read the Bible.  Wonder if there are any Jewish drivers?

"You do not see as many interracial marriages and I doubt anyone I know here has ever actually had a black or a gay person to their house as a guest."

I can only speak for myself, but the statement above from your post is just damn wrong.  You continually try to convince the forum of your broadminded views developed from vast experience and observations.  Your opinions of forum members and the area in which you have lived for 12 years seem to be very narrow-minded and off the mark.

I was born and raised in Arkansas, so have definitely seen a lot, especially when I ran a paper route in the black section of downtown Pine Bluff Arkansas.  I was raised Catholic and my Dad was hounded to join the White Citizens Council, even though they were rabidly against black, Catholic, and Jewish people.  He was incredulous that they would even ask him to join.  I guess they were dumb too.

That being said  I have had black and gay people as guests in my home, with some spending the night.  Maybe it is the old saying that you can't judge a book by its cover, but I value the person without regard to the physical or other characteristics that might be different than mine.

We tend to look at the content of a person's character, whether they are law abiding, pay their taxes, act responsibly, etc.  The color of their skin or sexual orientation is not of any importance to us.  I pick up that young man and give him a ride because he was walking to work in the rain, snow or sleet. I admired his dedication and he was a fine person and I enjoyed talking to him even if it was for a short time.  And the nice young man that took my daughter to the prom got the same scary look from me regardless of skin color......I am equal opportunity with dates.

The left is consumed with race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.  We just don't care as long as they don't try to force us to violate our personal social and political beliefs.

How many Black people and gay people have you entertained in your home?

I just don't get this question.  I am willing to bet if you went to College Park in Atlanta and asked a black person how many white people they've had in their homes they would say none.  It doesn't signify or mean anything.  As for the gay question, I can tell you honestly I have no idea because I don't ask people what their sexual orientation is.  I have people of color that work for my company that I have entertained in my home.  I am sure I have gay people that work for me as well but I don't know because I don't ask and I don't care.  I have had black people spend the night in my home but it doesn't mean anything.  News flash.....you can answer none to both of those questions and not be a racist or homophobe and you can answer yes to both and be a racist and a homophobe.  It doesn't mean anything.

I actually believe you.  I don't know about gays, but the military is a great leveler when it comes to color.  Nowadays, I suspect that it is the same with gay people.

A funny story.  In my office of engineers, I had a number of military people.  And one thing I know is that when you have a group of military, they tend to reach out to the new guy and bring the along.  I had a black Major assigned.  The first thing he did is put up a poster that I thought was black-centric, but hey, it was his cube.  I assume the other military guys reached out to him, but he shunned them.  Didn't even try to fit in and had a big chip on his shoulder.  His work wasn't great, and he was given a project by my boss to work on, which he managed to screw up.  So when his rating came due - I had the AF "adjective" handbook and I used the middlin' words to describe his efforts.    He just had a freaking fit and accused me of trying to destroy his career, complained to my boss (his secondary rater) who was not impressed with him either.  I always felt that he had been passed along in his career and filled someone's quota.  He was about the 4th graduate of Howard University that I had supervised and every time I was less than impressed.

My goodness MM, you are back to your old ways deciding what matters and what doesn't, who is right and who is wrong... I'm wondering when you were appointed in charge of the population.  One could say your ego has taken on a "God-like" quality.  Should I expect to see you at the right hand of St Peter at the Pearly Gates?  You can be so incredibly pompous, you make me laugh.

Damn Hound, I just told you speaking for myself, you are wrong!  Now you are obviously doubting what I said is true or want me to produce some sort of accounting of my life to you.  We have shared some civic minded activities together, but you know absolutely nothing about me other than I call you out on this forum occasionally. Don't try to lump me in there with all these folks you consider to be racist and bigoted.

It's not racist, it is a fact.  I had 4 different employees that graduated from Howard University over the years.  None of them could write, none of them could speak properly and it made me wonder about the quality of the faculty.  I feel sorry for kids and parents that pay for an education, and then not get their money's worth.  Look at ASU  - parents are paying for their kids to go there, and what kind of education do you think they are getting when their accredidation is at risk all the time.

You are always worrying about kids being taught to think liberally in college - well, I think that it is reasonable to expect that someone that graduates from college be able to read and write in proper English.  I've seen white people who have the same problem but they were not consistently from one school.

But if it makes you feel better to call me a racist - go for it.  I've been called that quite frequently lately, because I won't say Black Lives Matter and I won't sign up for the current narrative.

Mine was an honest question and an honest opinion.  I truly do not get the point of these litmus test questions because they are meaningless and are just intended to silence others or impugn them by inference.  No entertaining of gay or black people in your house?  Racist homophobe, right?  That is intellectually dishonest in my opinion and comes across as bigoted toward others.

According to Hound if you never had a gay or black person in your home it's dispositive of your racism and homophobia.  Quite the litmus test with zero evidence.  She's the cranky one in this thread, in my opinion.

I think she is off her rocker personally.  Sometimes I have agreed with her in the past, but as of late after discussion of Clorox and her stated approval and that she would be willing to break windows and pull down statues in protest if she felt that it was a worthy  SJ cause -- she has shown to me that she is willing to break the law for something she belives will change the future to a version she prefers.

That is also how we had the Flynn case via Obama, Biden, Strozk, Rice Comey etc who was willing to break laws to destory a man because they felt they justified.

Maybe I mean this "Metaphorically", but probably not.

She is definitely more thin skinned than usual for some reason.  Jumping all over me for asking her honest questions.  I get it if you don't agree with my opinions....heck, half the time I end up not agreeing with them.  But they are based on facts and logic and when the facts change my opnion changes.  Oh well, we all have bad days.....

I love being called a racist homophobe.  It lets me know I have bested whomever with intelligent arguments over their feelings.

My ex-wife has a gay brother who moved in with us for a while till he could get back on his feet.  So I am obviuosly homophobic.  He was/is HIV/AIDS positive.  So I am obviuosly a germaphobe too.  I once dated a black woman a few times.  So I am obviuosly racist.

All this from folks who claim/think they know me because they read what I post.  I will defend a position I don't even belive in just for the sake of a good argument.  I am also a bible thumping right wing Christian that hasn't been to Church in 30 years...lol.  I guess thats my favorite.  My spiritual and religious beliefs are my own and I rarely share them and only with VERY few people, becasue frankly it's none of their business.

I'm not defending any school system that sends student out without a knowledge of reading, writing and speaking.  I do know that in college, most schools have remedial programs for those that don't have basic reading and writing skills.

I was talking to a friend today.  He both teaches and does student advising at the college level.  We were talking about student loans and I mentioned how often students end up taking big loans to major in subject where the job prospects are very limited or low paying.  He said that as a student advisor, there is a "no go" zone when talking to students about majors.  That they are being told to "follow their passion", even when that "passion" may not net a job or a job with no prospects to earning enough to pay off student loans.
