Wireless service providers are scrambling to resolve an issue that has seen
most phone and Internet customers without service since the early Wednesday
morning.
Customer service representatives are giving conflicting reports on an issue
that has left many in the immediate Alexander City area without cell phone,
Internet or land line service.
According to Verizon Wireless customer service representatives, since 9:29
a.m. some 25 cell tower sites were not working. Verizon customer service said
that AT&T reported a cable failure and that the issue is currently being
resolved.
According to T-Mobile customer service, an outage in the area of Alexander
City and Goodwater has caused a loss of voice and data service. T-Mobile
customer service expected the issue to be resolved in two hours and said
Windstream Communications and AT&T are working to resolve the issue.
The T-Mobile engineering department is also working on a solution.
AT&T customer service reported that every tower in the area located near
Main Street in Alexander City is “severely degraded,” a term used when a tower
is down. AT&T customer service said some five to six towers in the area near
Main Street are down, affecting an area of five to six miles in any direction.
AT&T is working to resolve the issue, but there is no estimate for when the
issue will be resolved.
