Simply countless people came to help. Aside from the volunteer firefighters, on and off duty officers. off duty paramedics and nurses from Auburn/Opelika that I know of. That's just a start. Tree cutters came in and helped clear streets once they were allowed in. Heard of one who paid his crew for several days clearing aound the CR 34 area. Red Cross was on scene shortly. One restaurant owner opened his doors, fed sandwiches / drinks to all who were working.
Part of our great heritage is how large our hearts are when tragedy strikes. Our people roll up their sleeves, see what needs doing and get to work.

Touching article in this months Lake Martin Living by the son of a lovely lady that were lost on April 27th. He mentions several 'heroes' that worked tireless through the night to help his family.

The storm crashed across Pace's Peninsula and within 10 minutes, Pace's Point Volunteer firefighters hit the road. These guys cleared debris in the dark and climbed over mountains of fallen trees, etc., to get to every home in the path of the tornado. We are blessed that most of the homes were not occupied (since they're second homes). The residents who were at home were battered and sustained some injuries - but none were life threatening.
Meanwhile, PPFD volunteers kept clearing and checking on folks. And, volunteer fire departments poured into our area to lend a hand - Newsite, Jacksons Gap, Reeltown, Union, Stillwaters, and Opelika. They were here all night. The Sheriff's department went above and beyond. Then, Poplar Dawg opened the doors to provide much appreciated sandwiches to all the volunteers until about 4:30 in the morning.
Until you've walked around in some of these places and seen the devastation first hand, you just can't take it all in. But there were lots of heros that first night and then for the next 10 days. Pace's Point Fire helped to coordinate the needs of approximately 80 families and over 400 volunteers from all over the state. I'm proud to live in such a great place.

I agree w Toni, the Paces Pt VFD had very inspiring stories to tell. Lives were affected and they were there literally minutes after the tornado left.
See the below link, I took this picture of the Green Monster Fishing Light Bldg and Kelley's HVAC building the day after. I was down there talking to the survivors and shot this pic, it is one of my favorite and to me is a great example of everyone's attitude. The survivors were plucking up their courage and moving, and the volunteers like the PPVFD had not waited to be told what to do, or what govt agency should help, they jumped in and helped, spending money out of their own pockets to buy gas and supplies, long before the Feds declared that, lo and behold, we had an emergency.
Heroes in my book.

Mark McCoy- surived his housed being distroyed in Susanhanna crossing, he heard screams for help, found one of his jet ski floating in the water, drove over to the homes at Mountinbrook and found two perople trapped with significant injuires and a leg impailed he work to free them until help arrived.
