Had an interesting experience on the lake a couple of weeks ago.  Was in one of the open areas near Smith Mountain wakeboarding and wakesurfing with my Malibu.  I like this area because there are no houses and when you wakesurf it creates a pretty big wave.

Anyway, was cruising with a surfer behind the boat and along comes this very nice pontoon boat that was headed right toward me.  I am watching to see if he gives way and no joy.  At first I thought maybe he didn't see me but then I saw the driver and actually made eye contact.  It really looked like he was just determined to collide with me so I put out my hand to tell him to stop.  Which he did not do but he did swing behind us very close to the rear and went on about his business.  It was just an older guy and a woman on the boat so it was not like they were there to pull tubes or whatever and I was disturbing them.

It was a really mystifying experience for me because it was pretty obvious that he was not happy with me being where I was and doing what I was doing.  Here I thought I am being a courteous operator by boating in an area with no homes, docks, boats, etc. that would be impacted by my waves.  Maybe I got the wrong impression and he really didn't see me but I honestly don't think so.  Maybe it was someone on the forum and they can send me an email and tell me why they were annoyed.  I know some folks don't like wakesurfing but I was doing it in an area that was remote and you would have to go out of your way to get to.

Thanks for staying out there instead of riding closer to the houses.  When we used to ski, we would head out there because there are few houses, and many islands to help dissipate the wave action..  A few thoughts - yes, could be someone who was "cranky", could have been drunk, or maybe not wearing his corrective lenses.  A friend recently had an interaction with the MP because he could see the buoy, just could not see what it meant because he was wearing non-prescription shades instead of his glasses.

Speaking of bouy's, they need to be kept up. A lot of them on the lake are very faded and you are unable to tell if they're hazard or no wake. Aso, I've seen similar interactions between the wake boarders/skiers and tubers in the Coopers Creek area, not to mention the jet skiers.

I had to spend over $600 to repaid dock damage from neighbor wakesurfer last year.  Maybe your confrontation was from someone with a similar experience.  Wakeboaters are about the least respected people on the lake, and for good reason.  Thanks for at least trying to stay out of people's way.

Put me in the "thank you"  column for your courtesy of creating big wakes away from populated areas.  Some clown in a big green/black wake monster isn't so thoughtful in Madwin.

No problem.  A friend of mine bought a Malibu Wakesetter and his neighbor stopped over to see it and said, "Well, I see you just purchased yourself a Neighbor Hater."  I make tiny waves around the neighbors and defer the wakesurfing to the open areas away from houses.  Having said that, its one thing I love about Sandy Creek.  You can get away from houses and not bother the docks.  Other areas, especially to the south its not so easy.

We live on Sandy Creek near there and there are lots of long time lake residents and older folk. I guess some do not think much of the new fangled wake board boats.  :) Its a younger folks sport. Most in the area are very friendly and congenial. We too have a wakeboard boat, and after reading this site I have warned my husband that lake dwellers don't like:

1) Buzzing the docks with your boat
2) Music coming from your boat
3) Wake Boarders
4) Wake Surfers
5) Jet Skis
6) To be continued

My thought is -- we also live on the lake and have a dock..... We should just do onto others as we would have them do unto us and we will all be fine. Some people just like to be mad and there is nothing you can do about that.

Let me add to the list: Obviously Underage Jet Ski drivers....makes me cringe at the irresponsible adults involved.

There are a lot of good folks on this lake. That said, even many of the good folks need to open their minds and realize it's a public lake with many different interests. If someone can't accept the way you respectfully enjoy your time on a public lake, that's their problem...not yours.

He's going to do that to the wrong person one day.  I, for one, would not merely let be if I'm in the same situation with my friend or family member behind my boat.  Some people better realize quickly that not everyone plays by their imagined rules, and messing with the wrong "hooligan" will leave them needing  a spinal adjustment one day.
