what in the world has gotten into the marine police...they were out in full force on Saturday... They were pulling anyone and everyone over without cause. They had the Rock block with five boats tied up with poles...is this how summer is going to be? Are they trying to pay for those new boats they didn't get?

If you have nothing to worry about, you shouldn't mind being stopped by the Marine Police. And if you do have something to worry about, you should be stopped by the Marine Police. Either way, the only people who should be worried or complaining are the people who need to be somewhere besides on the water.

We are losing our freedoms...it has nothing to do with whether you have anything to be concerned about...we still live in America where the Constitution rules...(although I am beginning to worry)...our founding father's put safeguards against a over active police state...GOOD GOD PEOPLE....WAKE UP!

Sounds like West Montgomery complaining about traffic check points. If everything is legal then there is nothing to worry about. I would like to see the Marine Police able to take all the drunk idiots off tbe water.

i dont see this an an infringement on our rights, but an enforcement of LAWS to keep us safe--remember the 2 people who died last summer on the lake due to drunk boaters ???! maybe you are part of the problem--and while you are complaining, maybe you want traffic lights & stop signs removed also ???

I do think they should at least have to have a reason to pull you over!

looks like we have a number of members of the right wing terrorist groups on here...that DHS was warning us about. Apparently some people like a police state...oh sure come in search our homes without warrants...if you are aren't doing anything illegal...then you have nothing to worry about...I think that is how Hitler started.

Great point! It's not that we're doing anything wrong, but we have every right to enjoy the lake peacefully until they see us do something wrong...then pull us over.

Dang, I guess I'll have to stop drinkin'that N/A beer, thought I was doing good - but I ain't seen those stop signs or traffic lights. Are they at the rock?

Without cause is not infringement, more like harrassment!

If you are enjoying your boat one day and get hit by someone who is drunk, you will probably wonder why the Marine Police did not stop him before he got that far. The answer that you might be given is “there was no cause to check him, until now”. The unfortunate thing is that “now” may be too late. You and/or your friends on your boat may be injured or worse – killed – because of someone who was operating his/her boat “under the radar” that the Marine Police did not check because “there was no cause”.

Personally, I welcome a visit from the Marine Police. You should too. If you don’t, then you don’t deserve the privilege of being licensed to operate a vessel. That’s correct – our right to operate a boat in Alabama waters is a privilege – not a guarantee. Same as driving a car.

This is the biggest reason i have decided to sell my place. I see so much on the lake. last year at the fireworks i witnessed the water patrol beach his boat while i helped two boats off of the rock pile at the power lines. one of those boats had injuries and the water patrol would not help. i guess it is ticket and collect now, no longer serve and assist.

I don't mind getting pulled over for a check, it is getting treated like a criminal when you are pulled over that bothers me. I have yet to venture out on the lake this year, but I hope some of the officers have had an attitude adjustment from last year. A little courtesy goes a long way when it comes to dealing with law enforcement or any authority in general. However, it seems with our encounter last year Jesus could have been on our boat and we would have all been doing something wrong according to the officers attitude. Again, hopefully somebody complained enough and they got the message.

Operating a boat is quite different than a car or truck. Typically, you load up a case of beer and head out on the lake. Unlike a car, drinking while cruising in a boat seems to be cool. Not having enough life jackets is often less important than having enough beer. Running a boat in open water is quite different than trying to stay between the yellow lines. Police can visually see a vehicle driver who is erratic crossing over the line. In a boat out in open water it is quite different. There are no lines. There are no speed limits on the water. There is no driving test for boat owners. People rent boats with very little knowledge on operating the boat.

I agree that they should not stop a boat without cause but from a paractical standpoint that will not work. On the water, the Coast Guard and Marine Police have to be proactive to save lives. There is no excuse for then to have bad attitudes and they should be removed from dealing with the public. However, the public just needs to also show respect as the Guard and Police are not seeking to arrest you. Simply, they are just trying to save lives.

I served in the Coast Guard and did my share of boardings.

I agree 100% with Tate AU. I have witnessed "power of the badge" syndrome, and it has no place in law enforcement. I don't have a problem with courteous checks, a polite warning, or even a citation when due, but this is not the way some officers conduct business.

We all know that cops are usually a-holes when they pull you over. Even street cops are when they pull you over. Just have all your gear straight, answer there questions, ignore thier attitude and then go about your day. Are we all not adults????

And what does taking unwarranted crap have to do with being an adult? I have met several polite law officials over the years....being an a-hole is not a job requirement and only causes problems.

and have never been pulled over before on the Lake. They came up with some excuse that they were checking to see if I was wearing lanyard with kill switch attached, which I was wearing. I guess they are bored or something.

Marine Police are cool in my book. But I will admit, out of all the good ones there are at least two on that lake that only seem to see how many tickets they can write in a day. Was at the rock one day, and these "two" showed up. I was out there for hours and by the time they were done, they had pulled over or went aboard every single boat out there. This went on for a good 3 hour period. Ticket, after Ticket, after Ticket. yes we got one as well, and it was extremely questionable if we should, but wasn't worth the fight. Just pay the fine and move on. But the thing that really got me was not the fact that we got the ticket. That is easily taken care of. My biggest problem was the lack of professionalism from the MP, and how rude he was in the manner that he spoke with me and my husband in front of our children. That was uncalled for.

what is cool is the one that rides on a seadoo with a cowboy hat on. He sits at the rock and writes down registration #'s of boats that he suspects are not exactly being responsible. Later, when the mp in boats get there, he gives them the info. AND he thinks no-one knows. We are legal, so we laugh at him and watch thru binoculars. That drives him nuts.

My son got stopped Saturday by two Game Wardens in a JonBoat?? Kids and adults in a ski boat. Checked for "V" on license and waved byebye. Strange.

Even more reason for me to stay away from the rock.

Listen, Im all for keeping the idiots and drunks off the lake and I dont mind getting pulled over every once in a while for life vest and lanyard checks. But the attitudes and the harassment for no reason needs to stop. I've been pulled over once and the officer was a total jackass and treated us as criminals instead of tax paying citizens. What was our crime we were pulled over for? He though our registration was out of date. Here I am thinking isn't that why they color code them?

I guess making the lake safer at the cost of personal freedoms is ok with most of you...

or 18 months or so had a lot to say about lack of enforcement of boating laws, me too. Noise/speed/drinking/negligence/ect. The MP monitors this forum regularly. Maybe they were listening, and responded?

People have forgotten what this country is all about! In the words of Ben Franklin:

to purchase a little Temporary Safety,
deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

....and I remember when we got pulled over at "the rock" by the police... we had kids with life jackets and the marine police gave the kids and adults a "present" for being in compliance.. I think it was a balloon for doing the right thing.

Do you ever wonder how many people who get stopped by police immediately put up their "why me" guard and get on the defensive? I am glad they are on the lake and patrolling as there are too many "apprentices" on the lake that think they know it all.

Just remember, they are here to help all of us, even if you don't want it.

I still say, if you are doing nothing wrong and they pull you over, thank you for doing your job..and remember, there are a lot of people out there riding in boats who think they know it all and their $$$$$it don't stink.

Absolutely agree. And if you are totally cooperative and feel the MP is rude or is on a power trip, report it unemotionally to their head office with details. If there indeed are cowboy MPs out there, with enough complaints the supervisor(s) will reign them in.

What is the rule about the lanyards? Isn't it only if a boat is not over a certain length?

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to get in contact with their supervisors and lodge a complaint -- you could even mention that the ticket was borderline, yet you are accepting it and will pay. They really do need to know that a couple of them are giving the rest a bad image.

This attitude thing will be solved by working within the system, not #itch sessions on the forum.

And for the poster below saying we are willing to give up "personal freedoms" to make the lake safer, you are right. However we are also perfectly free to operate our vessel(s) on the lake within the law.

We used to have a poster with the screen name "Marine Police". If he is still active and reading the forum I'd like to hear his take on this issue.
